Marty Supreme has outpaced One Battle After Another at the Aussie box office, and now A24’s latest hit is set for streaming after a fresh deal with HBO Max. Find out what’s next for the film and its star.

After pulling ahead of One Battle After Another at the local box office, Marty Supreme is shaping up as one of A24’s top performers. Riding this wave, the studio has extended its streaming partnership with HBO Max, which kicked off in 2023 after A24’s previous arrangement with Showtime wrapped up. This move means HBO Max punters can keep enjoying A24’s acclaimed catalogue, a big draw for subscribers.

Royce Battleman, executive VP of global content acquisitions at Warner Bros. Discovery, commented on the renewed partnership:

A24 has been an incredible partner, bringing a slate of talented creative voices and an engaged audience base to the platform. Their bold storytelling perfectly complements the distinct programming offered on HBO Max.

While the film is tipped to hit VOD in early February—When to Stream has pegged 3 February as the likely date—there’s still no official word on when it’ll land on streaming platforms.

Streaming Release Still Up in the Air

With the Oscars just around the corner, it’s unlikely A24 will rush to announce a streaming date, especially with all the awards chatter swirling around the film and Timothée Chalamet. After Chalamet’s recent Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical, both he and the film are hot favourites for Academy Award nods.

Last year’s Anora saw a spike in VOD sales thanks to Oscar buzz, and Marty Supreme is expected to see a similar boost once it goes digital. Given the film’s strong box office run, A24 will probably look to make the most of VOD demand before locking in a streaming date. With the Oscars set for 15 March, an April or May streaming release seems most likely at this stage.

Box Office Success and Chalamet’s Star Power

Looking at the film’s performance in cinemas, it’s fair to say it’s smashed expectations and put to bed any doubts about Chalamet’s status as a major box office draw. While some reckon the era of the movie star is fading, with big franchises pulling in the crowds instead, Chalamet has bucked the trend.

He’s managed to fill seats whether he’s fronting a big-budget epic or a smaller, character-driven project. Some even say he’s the natural successor to Tom Cruise when it comes to pulling punters into the cinema. After dominating the holiday box office for three years running, and with Dune 3 on the horizon, Chalamet’s place as a leading man seems well and truly cemented.

Critical Acclaim and Audience Response

Marty Supreme has scored an 8.2 on IMDB and sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, with an 83% audience score. So far, it’s raked in $79.4 million at the box office, and the numbers are still climbing. The film’s success has only added to the anticipation for its digital and streaming release, with fans keen to see what all the fuss is about.

The film is still screening in cinemas across Australia, so there’s time to catch it on the big screen before it heads online. Share your thoughts on the film below if you’ve seen it.
