If you've kept up with Reacher on Prime Video, you know it's not exactly subtle television.

Alan Ritchson's bulldozer of a hero has been flattening criminals for three turbocharged seasons, and Series 4 is already set for August 12. But before you carry on with the binge-watch, there's a particular film you'll want to squeeze in—especially if you've never seen the original big screen version of Jack Reacher. Because that movie, with Tom Cruise as a pint-sized juggernaut, hit streaming yesterday.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back has dropped on Paramount+ on 1 August 2026.

Tom Cruise: The First Reacher

Before Alan Ritchson started punching holes in walls, Tom Cruise was the face—well, the height-challenged face—of Jack Reacher. Cruise first took the role on in the 2012 adaptation, simply titled Jack Reacher. That first film went down well enough, pulling in over $218 million at the box office, and showing there was life in Lee Child's ex-military drifter beyond the books. Cruise may not be remotely close to Reacher's described 6'5, brick-built physique, but he's certainly got the clenched-jaw thing covered.

So, it was inevitable the studio would want more. Enter Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016, where Tom Cruise cycled back for another round as the itinerant hero. This isn't some utterly disposable sequel either; the story picks up with Reacher investigating the framing of his old colleague, Susan Turner. She's been put in the frame for espionage and locked up, so Reacher does what Reacher does—busts her out, and together they go after a shady private military firm called Parasource. Complicating things further, someone from Reacher's own past is dragged into the chaos, giving the film its emotional punch.

The Streaming Arrival & Extra Titles

The big headline here is that Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will finally be available to stream in the UK from 1 August 2026 on Paramount+. It's been oddly tricky to find on subscription services, so this should help newcomers and fans alike. If you do hop on Paramount+ for Cruise's Reacher, you'll also spot a batch of other notable films dropping the same month: The Time Traveler's Wife, Where The Wild Things Are, Blade Runner 2049, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence, just for good measure.

Ritchson vs. Cruise (and the Source Material)

No Reacher conversation is complete without addressing the elephant in the room: Cruise's height, or lack thereof. The Jack Reacher book series by Lee Child started in 1997 with Killing Floor, and has grown into a universe of over 30 novels plus various stories and cameos—even popping up in Stephen King's Under the Dome. The literary Reacher is supposed to be a tank: 6'5, built like he eats paving slabs for breakfast. Tom Cruise, being a full foot shy of that description, raised eyebrows among the purists when cast.

To be fair, Cruise gave the films a slick, made-for-cinema intensity, but the character never quite landed among action film upper echelons, especially when Cruise went all-in on the Mission: Impossible juggernaut. The real evolution came when Alan Ritchson took over in 2022 on streaming—he's closer to the character's hulking build, and the series gets the balance of brains and bravado right, layering in stronger plots and proper dry humour. At this point, it's hard not to prefer Ritchson's version, but the Cruise films are worth a look, if only to chart how far the adaptation has come.
