Charles Melton Is in Talks to Play Kakashi in the Live-Action Naruto Movie
Destin Daniel Cretton's Naruto adaptation has been circling for a while, and this is the casting that will decide whether the fandom gives it a chance: Charles Melton is in talks to play Kakashi Hatake.
Why this specific role matters
Kakashi is the audience's entry point into the whole ninja apparatus — the masked, perpetually late teacher whose casual competence has to be established in about four minutes of screen time. Get him wrong and the film has no anchor. Get him right and you buy considerable goodwill for everything else.
Melton spent years being underestimated on Riverdale and then delivered a performance in May December that reset his entire career, earning a run of critics' awards. He's the kind of casting that suggests somebody is taking this seriously rather than hiring for jawline.
The bigger picture
Cretton directed Shang-Chi and, more recently, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is currently sitting on top of the domestic box office. Handing him a beloved manga adaptation is a reasonable bet by a studio that has watched him deliver both scale and character work.
Live-action anime adaptations have a body count. This one has a director with a hit and a casting instinct that isn't obvious. That's more than most of them started with.
