Darren Aronofsky and Gillian Flynn Join Forces for Bold New Thriller
Darren Aronofsky and Gillian Flynn are teaming up for the first time on a mysterious erotic thriller, promising a dark, modern edge and fresh take on the genre.
Darren Aronofsky is adding another project to his already packed slate, this time linking up with acclaimed author Gillian Flynn for a yet-to-be-titled erotic thriller. While the storyline is still under wraps, the pairing hints at a sharp, possibly subversive approach to the genre. Flynn, known for penning the screenplay for Steve McQueen’s Widows and adapting her own bestseller Gone Girl for David Fincher, has seen several of her works like Dark Places and Sharp Objects make successful leaps to the screen. She’s also set to write Tim Burton’s much-hyped reimagining of Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman for Warner Bros. Despite her busy schedule, this marks the first time Flynn and Aronofsky will be working together.
Creative Collaboration and Production
The film will be produced by 1.21, the outfit behind Austin Butler’s Elvis and the horror flick Together starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie. With this backing, punters can expect a film with a dark, contemporary feel and plenty of thematic depth. The project stands out as a fresh collaboration for both Flynn and Aronofsky, each bringing their own distinctive style to the table.
Aronofsky’s Expanding Portfolio
Aronofsky’s latest work, Caught Stealing, has already drawn attention for its shift in tone. As
‘Caught Stealing represents a departure for the filmmaker, and it indicates a desire to show that he has other strings to his bow than traumatic, haunting dramas that hollow out audiences’ souls.’
In this film, Austin Butler takes on the role of Hank Thompson, a New York bartender who gets tangled up in the city’s criminal underbelly, thanks to his punk-rock neighbour, played by Matt Smith.
Upcoming Projects and Genre Variety
Alongside this new thriller, Aronofsky is juggling several other projects. He’s got an A24 film called Breakthrough in the works, with Dwayne Johnson set to star, a reboot of Cujo for Netflix, and an Elon Musk biopic also for A24. Known for his early work on the harrowing Requiem For A Dream, Aronofsky has since delivered hits like Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale, showing he’s not afraid to mix things up across genres.
The trailer for his 2025 release, Caught Stealing, is already out, giving locals a taste of what’s to come from one of the industry’s most versatile directors.
