DCU’s Batman Film Finds New Writer After The Flash
A familiar face is penning the script for the next Batman film in the DCU, with Warner Bros. taking their time to get it right. Find out who’s behind the much-anticipated project.
The next chapter for Batman in the DCU is quietly taking shape, with a writer who’s no stranger to Gotham’s world now on board. The Brave and the Bold, first revealed back in January 2023 as part of James Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” line-up, has been one of the more talked-about projects, even as other titles like Superman and Creature Commandos have already made their debut. While Supergirl is set to hit screens in June 2026, several other projects have been stuck in limbo. Now, The Brave and the Bold is finally moving forward, thanks to a new scriptwriter joining the team.
Word is that Christina Hodson, who previously wrote The Flash and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is now working on the screenplay for this Batman outing. There’s been no official word from DC Studios or Warner Bros. just yet. Insiders say Warner Bros. is taking a careful approach with this one, so punters shouldn’t expect a finished script any time soon. The film will see Hodson team up again with Andy Muschietti, who directed The Flash and is set to helm this Batman flick. Hodson had also worked on a script for a Batman Beyond film that never saw the light of day, but it apparently impressed the right people at the studio.
Changing Gears Behind the Scenes
It’s not a huge shock to see Hodson attached, considering she was part of the writers’ room James Gunn put together for the DCU in early 2023. What’s interesting is the timing—Hodson may have only recently been brought in to take a fresh look at the project. Back in February 2025, Gunn mentioned that The Brave and the Bold had a writer, but he didn’t want to name them, saying,
“as it puts too much pressure on the guy.”
Since “guy” usually means a bloke, it suggests Hodson is actually the second writer to tackle the script. Reports say she’s been working on it since autumn 2025, so it’s possible the original writer stepped away, or Gunn decided to steer the film in a new direction.
Some might be surprised that Gunn is reuniting Muschietti and Hodson after The Flash, which didn’t exactly set the box office alight and copped a fair bit of criticism. While many reckon Gunn’s praise for The Flash as
“one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen,”
was just promo talk, maybe he genuinely saw something in the team’s work and wants to give them another go. Muschietti’s proven his chops with It and its follow-up, and Hodson’s Birds of Prey is widely considered a standout in the DCEU. Her script for Bumblebee is also seen as a high point for the Transformers franchise. So, there’s still hope for this new take on Batman.
Patience Required for Batman Fans
Don’t expect any big updates on The Brave and the Bold in the near future. Gunn has already said he’s not casting Batman for Man of Tomorrow, and the new film isn’t expected to land in cinemas before 2028. The delay is partly to avoid clashing with Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which is due out on 1 October 2027. Some fans are keen to see Reeves’ Batman and his crime saga folded into the DCU, but Gunn and Peter Safran are set on keeping the two universes separate. That way, Reeves can stick to his own plans, and the DCU’s Batman can get up to more colourful adventures without stepping on any toes.
