Disney’s live-action Tangled remake has cast Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, but the real buzz is around who’ll play Mother Gothel. With Marvel stars in the mix, fans are divided over the perfect fit.

Disney’s much-hyped live-action take on Tangled has officially locked in Teagan Croft, known for Titans, to play Rapunzel. Now, all eyes are on who’ll step into the shoes of the infamous Mother Gothel. Early chatter had Scarlett Johansson in the running, but word is Marvel’s Kathryn Hahn is now the frontrunner for the role.

Hahn hasn’t been shy about her interest, even joking about her karaoke chops in an interview:

Yes! I mean, I’m really good at karaoke.

Given her standout vocals in Agatha All Along, plenty reckon she’d be a solid pick for the villain. Still, there’s another name that’s been floating around fan circles for ages—Cher.

Fans Push for Cher as the Ultimate Gothel

When it comes to dream casting, Cher’s name pops up more than most for Mother Gothel. The similarities are hard to ignore, and it’s not just about looks. The resemblance between the pop icon and the animated character is uncanny, and that’s no accident.

Director Bryan Howard has admitted that Cher was a major inspiration for Gothel’s design. He once said:

It’s true! Maybe because she’s too Gothic and exotic looking. She was one of the people we looked at. She was a hard character to crack, and Glen struggled with that for years.

It’s not just the visual side, either. Thematically, it fits. Mother Gothel’s all about chasing eternal youth, and Cher’s been defying the years for decades. If she’d landed the part, most punters would’ve been cheering.

Disney’s Direction and the Remake Question

Despite the fan campaigns, Cher doesn’t seem to be in the mix. With Hahn’s enthusiasm and her recent Marvel fame, she’s likely to get the nod. Still, it’s hard not to wonder if Disney’s missing a trick by not going with the obvious choice.

All this talk about casting brings up a bigger question: do we really need a new version of a film that’s still fresh in everyone’s minds? The original Tangled, released in 2010, still holds up for repeat viewings. For many, this remake feels more like a corporate move than a creative one.
