Dynamic Duo Animated Film Stays Independent from DCU Plans
James Gunn has shared fresh details on the much-anticipated Dynamic Duo animated film, confirming it’s moving ahead smoothly and won’t be altered to fit into the DC Universe. The story spotlights Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as Robin, with a release date set for June 2028.
James Gunn has offered a couple of key updates on the upcoming Dynamic Duo animated film, putting to rest any speculation about its connection to the wider DC Universe. When a fan on Threads asked about the project’s progress, Gunn replied,
“Really, really well.”
Another punter questioned whether the film was being reworked to slot into the DCU, to which Gunn simply responded,
“Nope.”
Arthur Mintz, who heads up animation at Swaybox, is directing the project, working from a script penned by Matthew Aldrich, best known for his work on Coco. Gunn is producing alongside Matt Reeves, the bloke behind The Batman, but there’s no sign that this new film will tie into Reeves’ Batman universe.
Unique Blend of Animation, Puppetry, and CGI
Back when the film was first announced in 2024, Gunn described it as
“a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI.”
The story zeroes in on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both of whom have donned the Robin mantle in the comics. The focus is on their dynamic as young sidekicks, exploring their relationship during their formative years. This marks the first animated feature to come out of DC Studios under Gunn’s leadership.
Despite the buzz, there’s no indication that Dynamic Duo will cross over with any other Batman-related projects or the broader DCU. The creative team seems keen to keep this story self-contained, letting the characters and their journey stand on their own.
Release Date and What’s Next for DC Films
Dynamic Duo is currently slated for release on 30 June 2028, giving fans plenty of time to build anticipation. In the meantime, DC has a packed slate, with Supergirl set to hit cinemas in June 2026 and The Batman 2 scheduled for 1 October 2027. There’s also a live-action Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, which isn’t expected before 2028.
With so many projects on the horizon, DC Studios is clearly not short on ambition. But for now, Dynamic Duo stands apart, promising a fresh take on two of the most iconic sidekicks in comic book history, without being tangled up in the larger DCU web.
