Ella Purnell on Lucy’s Wild Streak in Fallout S2 Ep4
Ella Purnell opens up about Lucy MacLean’s unexpected violent outburst in Fallout season 2, episode 4, calling it her favourite moment and a fresh challenge in her acting career.
Ella Purnell, who plays Lucy MacLean in the second season of Fallout, has given her thoughts on Lucy’s sudden and rather shocking turn to violence in episode four. The British actor didn’t hold back her excitement, saying this moment was easily her favourite in the new season. She described the experience as both fun and a real change of pace from her usual roles.
“I couldn’t believe it. Coming from any other character, you’d be like, ‘Yeah, it’s just Fallout,’ but just something about it being Lucy, it feels scandalous,”
Purnell said in a chat after the episode aired.
“It’s like when your little sister goes out and gets a little wild – it’s crazy.”
She went on to say,
“Very fun to see that side of her, to play that side of her, and also, a new experience for me. I haven’t done that a lot in my career. I didn’t know how it was gonna turn out. It turned out good, thank God, I think.”
Lucy’s Transformation in ‘The Demon in the Snow’
Directed by Stephen Williams, the episode titled ‘The Demon in the Snow’ kicks off with Lucy waking up in a camp run by the New California Republic. She quickly realises she’s been hooked up to a mysterious drip. Not long after, she leaves the safety of the camp with The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, and starts to feel the effects of whatever she’s been given. It’s not long before she’s itching, her mood’s all over the place, and she’s acting out in ways no one saw coming.
The real shock comes when Lucy, completely uninhibited, gleefully takes out a group of Elvis impersonators on the edge of New Vegas. The cause? She’s been dosed with Buffout, and now she’s hooked. It’s a wild ride for both the character and the audience, and Purnell clearly relished the chance to show a different side of Lucy.
Playing with Comedy and Bravery
Purnell spoke about how Lucy’s bravery and toughness really come through in this episode.
“She’s very tough, she’s very brave, I think much braver than I would be, given the circumstances,”
she said. For Purnell, stepping into the shoes of someone who, even for a few minutes, doesn’t worry about the consequences or even the idea of death, was a unique challenge.
“But to play a character who truly doesn’t conceive the notion of death for just five minutes of the day, that suddenly there’s no stakes, it changes all the tension in the scene, changes all the tension that drives the character. And I get to play with some comedy in there, it was really fun.”
