Emma Stone’s new sci-fi comedy Bugonia lands on digital services just weeks after its cinema premiere. Find out why the film’s early digital release has everyone talking.

Emma Stone’s latest foray into science fiction comedy, Bugonia, has made its way to digital platforms less than a month after its initial run in cinemas on 31 October 2025. From 25 November at midnight Eastern Time (or 24 November, 9 p.m. Pacific), punters could buy or rent the film on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and other major services.

Stone and Lanthimos Team Up Again

Bugonia marks the fourth time director Yorgos Lanthimos and Oscar-winner Emma Stone have joined forces, following their previous work on The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. In this offbeat comedy, Stone takes on the role of Michelle, a high-powered pharmaceutical boss who finds herself abducted by two blokes convinced she’s not from this world.

Here’s a quick rundown of the essentials: Bugonia is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Stavros Halkias, and Aidan Delbis. The film currently holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes and runs for two hours.

Box Office Woes and Early Digital Release

The decision to push Bugonia to digital so soon after its cinema release has raised a few eyebrows, but the reason seems pretty straightforward. The film has struggled to pull in crowds at the box office, earning just $32 million globally after nearly a month, well short of its reported $55 million budget.

With the number of screens showing Bugonia dropping each week, the studio appears to be banking on digital sales and rentals to help recoup costs and reach a wider audience. It’s not exactly a shock, given Lanthimos’ track record for unpredictable box office results. His earlier indie projects made modest returns, but The Favourite was a breakout, raking in $95 million worldwide. Poor Things did even better, crossing the $111 million mark. Not every outing has been a hit, though—Kinds of Kindness only managed $16 million. Bugonia started strong with a $5 million opening weekend in the US, the best of Lanthimos’ career, but things slowed down quickly after that.

Streaming Prospects and Release Patterns

At this stage, Bugonia is only available for digital purchase or rental and hasn’t landed on any subscription streaming services. Still, fans are already asking when it’ll show up on Peacock. If Universal and Focus Features stick to their usual pattern, the film could be streaming about six to eight weeks after its cinema debut.

Recent releases like Honey Don’t! (out 22 August, streaming from 3 October), Black Bag (14 March, streaming from 2 May), and Last Breath (28 February, streaming from 25 April) all followed a similar timeline. If Bugonia follows suit, it could hit Peacock in late December 2025 or early January 2026, lining up with its DVD release on 23 December.

What’s Next for Bugonia?

Whether you’re keen to catch Bugonia at home or reckon you’ll give it a miss, the film is still screening in cinemas worldwide and now available digitally. The studio will be hoping the early digital push helps it find a bigger audience and maybe even turn things around at the box office.

Bugonia is currently showing in cinemas and available for digital purchase or rental.
