Blumhouse’s Big Hope for 2025
This week’s release is a major one for Blumhouse, especially after a tough run this year. While the sequel hasn’t exactly wowed critics, there’s still a chance it could pull a decent crowd at the box office. The first film was a massive hit, raking in $291 million even with a streaming release at the same time. Early numbers for the follow-up suggest a more modest opening, with estimates sitting at about half the original’s debut.
Locally, the first film opened to $80 million in the US, but the sequel is tipped to bring in between $35 and $40 million. As with the original, reviews haven’t been glowing, but that’s never really been a dealbreaker for this franchise. In the end, it’ll come down to how the core fans respond.
What’s New in the Sequel?
The story picks up a year after Mike and Abby’s escape from the haunted pizzeria. On paper, the sequel steps things up, especially with the animatronics, which are a real highlight this time around. According to Josh Hutcherson, the team has doubled down on what made the first film a hit, from the number of animatronics to the intensity of the scares. There’s also a deeper dive into the characters’ psychological states.
Stuff goes down. It’s crazy. Everything that really worked in the first movie, we took that and just cranked it way up. We have like, double the amount of animatronics. The movie’s way scarier, a lot more jump scares. It’s dark. You get into the psychological shit of the characters. It’s great.
While the sequel might not reach the same box office heights as the original, with a production budget of $36 million, it’s still likely to turn a tidy profit for Blumhouse. Punters are encouraged to share their thoughts on the soundtrack and the film’s new direction.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 hits cinemas on 5 December 2025.
