Freya Allan, who plays Ciri in The Witcher, admits she almost left the Netflix series after Henry Cavill’s departure, sharing how tough it was to continue without him.

Freya Allan has spent nearly a decade bringing Ciri to life in Netflix’s take on The Witcher, with just one more season left in the pipeline. But things could have looked very different for the last two seasons, as Allan has revealed she seriously thought about walking away from the series after Henry Cavill, the original Geralt, decided to call it quits following season three.

Allan told NME she spent a fair bit of time mulling over whether to stick around after Cavill’s departure. The role of Geralt has since been handed over to Liam Hemsworth for the next two seasons.

“Season 3 was a really difficult season for everyone. I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy that played my adoptive father,”

Allan shared.

“For the first time, I was seeing what life away from The Witcher could look like and then the lead moves on… It was very weird. He’s the Geralt I grew up with.”

Shock Departure and Uncertainty

Cavill’s decision to leave didn’t just catch fans off guard—it surprised the cast as well. Allan only found out about his exit a day before the news broke. There’s been plenty of chatter about why Cavill left, with some punters guessing he wanted to get back into the Superman cape before the DC shake-up, while others reckon there were creative differences with the show’s producers over Geralt’s character.

Allan admitted that Cavill’s exit made her question her own future on the show. The idea of continuing without the actor she’d worked so closely with for years was a tough pill to swallow. But after some soul-searching, she decided to stay on and see the story through.

Carrying the Torch

Once Allan made up her mind to keep playing Ciri, she threw herself into the role with renewed energy. She’s even taken on Cavill’s passion for sticking close to the original books by Andrzej Sapkowski, wanting to give fans what they’re after.

“I really want to give fans what they want,”

she said.

“I’d also seen Henry, who was so knowledgeable and loyal to the books, push for certain lines to be included. When he left, I was inspired to take on that role.”

With season four now streaming and the fifth on the horizon, Allan is determined to honour the source material and the fans who’ve stuck with the series. She’s stepped up as a champion for the story’s roots, hoping to keep the spirit of the original alive as the show heads towards its final chapter.

Looking Ahead

Season four of The Witcher is already available for streaming, but there’s no word yet on when the fifth and final season will drop. While fans wait, there’s no shortage of other series to check out on Netflix. For Allan, the journey with Ciri continues, shaped by her own choices and the legacy left by her former co-star.
