Guy Pearce Says Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 2 Shoots Next Year
Guy Pearce has given a timeline for the sequel to 1994's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: cameras in 2027, cinemas in 2028. It will be the first Priscilla film without Terence Stamp alive to see it — and the first with him in it anyway.
"Well, the sequel, which is going to be — what are we now, '26?" Pearce told Good Morning America. "We'll probably shoot it '27, it'll come out '28."
Where the project stands
- Stephan Elliott writes and directs again, as he did on the original.
- Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving return as Felicia Jollygoodfellow and Mitzi Del Bra.
- Terence Stamp pre-shot all of Bernadette's scenes before his death in August 2025, at the director's insistence.
- The route starts in Australia again. Elliott has been clear that the bus goes considerably further this time.
- Status: script everyone likes, original cast attached, deals being finished.
The Bernadette problem, solved two years early
Elliott decided to shoot Stamp's material first rather than wait for the rest of the film to come together — a scheduling call made for practical reasons that turned into the thing that saves the movie. Stamp died at 87 last August, more than a year after those days on set.
The original followed three drag performers crossing the Australian outback in a bus called Priscilla, and it worked because the three of them were a specific, unrepeatable combination. A sequel without Bernadette would have been a different film wearing the same costumes.
Most legacy sequels have to write around an absence. This one does not have to. Bernadette is in the film because somebody made an unglamorous scheduling decision at exactly the right moment.
Shooting in 2027, out in 2028. The bus is being warmed up.
