HBO and Warner Bros. are eyeing a major Game of Thrones prequel film, with Henry Cavill rumoured for a starring role. Find out why this could be the comeback he needs.

With A Knight and the Seven Kingdoms set to keep the Game of Thrones spin-off streak going, word is HBO and Warner Bros. are lining up something massive for the next chapter: Aegon’s Conquest. This prequel, first announced in 2024, will follow King Aegon I Targaryen’s campaign to unite Westeros. Fans have been quick to throw Henry Cavill’s name into the ring for the lead, hoping he’ll land the part.

Since the initial announcement, there’s been little official news about the project’s progress. However, it’s now being developed as a drama series at HBO, with Warner Bros. reportedly keen to turn it into a feature film on the same scale as Dune. That’s a big call, but the story’s scope could well justify it.

Epic Scale: Why Aegon’s Story Could Rival Dune

Aegon’s conquest was no small feat—he managed to bring six out of seven kingdoms under his rule, with only Dorne holding out. The sheer scale and drama of the tale make it ripe for a big-screen adaptation, and the rich lore from George R.R. Martin’s world gives it plenty of depth.

With Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy wrapping up, there’s a gap for another sweeping epic. Aegon’s Conquest could fill that space, offering punters a fresh take on the fantasy genre with all the intrigue and spectacle fans expect from the franchise.

While Game of Thrones Season 8 left a mixed legacy, and House of the Dragon hasn’t quite hit the same heights, the story of Aegon I Targaryen could be the one to recapture that cultural buzz—especially if it gets the blockbuster treatment.

Henry Cavill’s Shot at Redemption

After his runs in The Witcher and the DCEU, Cavill’s recent box office outings haven’t exactly set the world alight. His last big hit was Mission: Impossible – Fallout back in 2018, and more recent films like The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Argylle haven’t made much of a splash.

Some reckon Cavill’s lack of high-profile roles has hurt his draw at the box office. Even with the upcoming Highlander reboot, it’s the Aegon project that could really put him back on top. Whether he’ll actually be cast is still up in the air, as the spin-off is only in early development. Mattson Tomlin, known for co-writing The Batman: Part II, has been attached to the script, and in July 2025 he mentioned he’d written “LOTS” for the project.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

With A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiering this week and House of the Dragon season 3 on the horizon, fans have plenty to look forward to. The potential for a film centred on Aegon’s conquest, especially with a star like Cavill, has the community buzzing.

Game of Thrones is streaming now on HBO Max in the US.
