A sharp-eyed viewer has uncovered a subtle nod in episode 7 of It: Welcome to Derry, alluding to a historic disaster that’s set to take centre stage in the show’s third season.

It: Welcome to Derry has delivered its most brutal moment yet, but there’s more to the chaos than meets the eye. One eagle-eyed fan has picked up on a sneaky background detail in episode 7, which quietly points to a grim event from the town’s past that’s due for a proper spotlight in the next season. If you’re not up to date, best to look away now—there are spoilers ahead. For those keen to avoid them, maybe check out a spoiler-free review first.

Backstory and Burning Tensions

After a detour to 1908 to shed light on Bob Grey’s transformation into the infamous clown, the penultimate episode, ‘The Black Spot’, returns to the main timeline. Here, things heat up—literally—when a furious crowd descends on Hallorann’s club, demanding he hand over Hank, Ronnie’s father. Hallorann stands his ground, and the mob responds by torching the place, trapping everyone inside. As panic sets in, the clown himself appears, ready to feed off the terror in the room.

Easter Egg in the Flames

Amidst the chaos, a fan noticed something odd lurking in the background. As the clown approaches Hallorann and the kids, a group of zombie-like figures gathers behind him. Among them is a headless boy, smoke curling from his scorched neck. Under a YouTube clip, a fan commented,

‘The Headless Egg Boy from the 1908 Kitchener Ironworks Explosion Easter Egg Hunt Tragedy was among them.’

If the boy rings a bell, it’s because he made an appearance in the 2017 film, where the clown used him to spook Ben from the Losers’ Club.

The Kitchener Ironworks Explosion and What’s Next

The Kitchener Ironworks disaster saw a massive blast during an Easter egg hunt in 1908, claiming over a hundred lives. Witnesses at the time swore they saw a clown in the thick of it. This event, though, won’t be fully explored until the third season. The show’s timeline jumps back every 27 years, so the second season will head to 1935, and the third will revisit 1908.

The reason for these time jumps is simple: the story already covers what happens when the clown resurfaces 27 years after the first season—those events play out in Chapter 1. Another 27 years on, Chapter 2 sees the Losers’ Club finally put an end to the evil.

What’s Ahead for Derry

The final episode of the first season lands on 14 December. For those keeping track, there’s a full release schedule available. If you’re after more, there’s a guide to all the hidden nods and cameos in the show, plus a rundown of upcoming Stephen King adaptations on the way.
