How a Festive Flop Brought Amanda Seyfried a Razzie Nod
Timothée Chalamet’s early career included a little-known Christmas film that not only missed the mark with critics, but also landed Amanda Seyfried an unexpected Razzie nomination. Find out how it all unfolded.
Timothée Chalamet is making headlines these days for his standout performance in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, which recently earned him a Critics’ Choice Award. But before he became a household name, Chalamet appeared in a 2015 Christmas flick, Love the Coopers, that’s mostly faded from memory.
What’s more surprising than Chalamet’s early role is Amanda Seyfried’s involvement. Seyfried, who first caught attention in Mean Girls back in 2004, had already built a solid reputation with films like Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables, and Mank. So, seeing her pop up in a film that scored just 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside names like Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, and Alan Arkin, raised a few eyebrows.
Holiday Film Misses the Mark
Love the Coopers was directed by Jessie Nelson and featured a hefty ensemble cast: Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Jake Lacy, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, and Timothée Chalamet. Despite the star power, the film clocked in at 1 hour 47 minutes and failed to impress, with critics giving it a chilly reception.
The story tried to blend warmth and quirkiness, but punters found it lacking. Even with a cast stacked with talent, the film quickly became one of those Christmas dramas that’s easy to forget. Seyfried played Ruby, a young waitress with a few troubles, working at a diner. Her character shares scenes with Alan Arkin’s Bucky and has a brief romantic subplot with Ed Helms’ Hank. Despite the small part, Seyfried’s performance didn’t go unnoticed – but not in the way she might have hoped.
Razzie Nomination for Seyfried
In 2016, Seyfried found herself nominated for a Razzie, an award that takes the mickey out of the year’s worst performances and films. She was in the running alongside Kaley Cuoco, Rooney Mara, Michelle Monaghan, and Julianne Moore. For Seyfried, it was a rare low in an otherwise strong run of roles.
Chalamet, meanwhile, was still finding his feet in the industry. It’s fair to say he didn’t have the luxury of picking and choosing scripts at that stage. The film’s poor reception didn’t do much for anyone’s CV, but it’s now just a footnote in both actors’ careers.
Chalamet’s Awards Season Momentum
Fast forward to 2026, and both Seyfried and Chalamet are in a much better spot. Seyfried recently scored a Critics’ Choice nomination for Best Actress thanks to her work in The Testament of Ann Lee. Chalamet, on the other hand, took home the Critics’ Choice Award for Marty Supreme.
This has sparked talk about whether Chalamet could finally nab his first Oscar. His performance in the A24 film has been widely praised, with some calling it his best yet. The Critics’ Choice Awards often hint at who might win at the Oscars, but it’s not a sure thing. For instance, Adrien Brody won both awards in 2025, and Brendan Fraser did the same in 2023. But in 2024, Paul Giamatti won the Critics’ Choice, while Cillian Murphy took the Oscar. The same happened in 2021, when Chadwick Boseman won the Critics’ Choice but Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar.
Oscar Prospects and Streaming Details
Chalamet’s chances look good, but he’s up against tough competition from Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan. The Oscar is within reach, but nothing’s locked in yet.
Love the Coopers is currently available to stream on Hulu and AMC+.
