Hugh Jackman opens up about the possibility of returning as Wolverine after Deadpool & Wolverine, but the final decision may rest with Marvel boss Kevin Feige. What’s next for the iconic mutant?

Hugh Jackman has shared his thoughts on whether he’ll be back as Wolverine after Deadpool & Wolverine, and it sounds like he’s not quite ready to hang up the claws. After five years of saying he was finished with the role following Logan’s much-praised finale, Jackman now reckons the story isn’t over—unless Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige decides otherwise.

Jackman’s Change of Heart

Jackman admitted it took a fair bit of convincing to get him back in the game.

For five years, I was like, ‘I’m done.’ And Ryan Reynolds would ring me a lot like, ‘Come on!’ I’m like, ‘No,’ And then I rang him one day and said, ‘I’m in.’ And so I go with this, and that’s what my gut says, it’s not done. But that’s just me! Marvel might have different ideas.

He’s left the door open, but it’s clear the final call isn’t his alone.

There’s already been talk about Wolverine and Deadpool popping up in Avengers: Doomsday, but nothing’s set in stone. Given Marvel’s recent run with multiverse storylines, though, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Jackman back in action.

Wolverine’s Return Feels Likely

The main thing holding back another Wolverine appearance was Jackman’s own reluctance after Logan. Now that he’s keen, Marvel’s unlikely to pass up the chance to bring him back, especially with the multiverse in play and fans eager for more.

Characters in the MCU have a habit of returning, one way or another. With rumours swirling about Chris Evans’ Captain America making a comeback in Doomsday, it’s hard to imagine Wolverine won’t be joining the fray, especially after Deadpool 3.

While there’s a risk that bringing back old favourites could take the edge off previous endings, the next Avengers films could still offer a fitting send-off for Jackman’s take on the character.

Secret Wars: A Possible Farewell

With the scale of Doomsday and Secret Wars, it’s likely we’ll see a stack of legacy characters returning for the final stretch of the multiverse saga. There’s word that Secret Wars could be the last hurrah for Fox’s X-Men, as Marvel looks to reboot the franchise.

Jackman’s Wolverine has been the face of the X-Men films for years, so it’d make sense for him to bow out alongside his fellow mutants in Secret Wars before Marvel moves on to a new era.

Jackman might be playing it cool about his involvement in Doomsday, much like Andrew Garfield did before No Way Home. With less than a year until Doomsday hits cinemas, punters are keen to see what Marvel has in store for Wolverine.

Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on 18 December 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on 17 December 2027.
