Indie horror film 'Marshmallow' is making waves on AMC+, blending chilling campfire scares with a clever sci-fi angle that’s drawn comparisons to cult favourite 'Donnie Darko'.

There’s always something new cropping up for horror fans, whether it’s a big-budget release or a lesser-known indie flick quietly landing on streaming. Among the latest to catch the attention of punters is Marshmallow, a small-scale production that’s quickly climbed the ranks on AMC+, now sitting as the fourth most-watched film on the platform. What sets this one apart is its knack for taking a well-trodden setup and flipping it on its head, with critics calling the result “refreshing.”

Set against the backdrop of a remote summer camp, Marshmallow weaves together elements of horror and science fiction. The story follows a shy 12-year-old, Morgan, and his mates as they’re hunted by a shadowy figure known only as the Doctor. While the premise might sound familiar, the film’s twist is anything but predictable.

Campfire Legends Come to Life

The official blurb sums it up: when Morgan arrives at a secluded camp, a spooky yarn about a sinister doctor starts to play out with unnerving accuracy. As the legend steps off the campfire log and into reality, Morgan and his new friends are forced to band together, trying to survive the night and get to the bottom of the camp’s dark secrets. What they uncover shakes up everything they thought they knew about fear, identity, and what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio and penned by Andy Greskoviak, the film features a cast including Kue Lawrence, Kai Cech, Giorgia Whigham, Max Malas, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, Pierson Fodé, Winston Vengapally, Samantha Neyland Trumbo, Alysia Reiner, Corbin Bernsen, and Paul Soter. After its debut at Panic Fest in Kansas City last March, it had a short run in cinemas before heading to streaming, where it’s been picking up plenty of positive feedback.

Critical Praise and Cult Comparisons

With an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Marshmallow has been described as both “cerebral” and packed with “bloody scares.” Avi Offer from NYC Movie Guru didn’t hold back in his praise, drawing a direct line to a cult classic:

“Refreshingly unpredictable, exhilarating, provocative and genuinely heartfelt. It's kindred spirits with another equally smart, surprising and moving sci-fi movie, Donnie Darko.”

That’s a hefty comparison, but it’s not without merit. The film’s science fiction threads echo the style of Richard Kelly’s 2001 hit, giving the story a thoughtful edge. Matt Donato from Daily Dead called it “a sneakily thought-provoking experience that's so much more than what we assume it to be.”

Audience Reactions and Streaming Success

Viewers seem to agree, with Marshmallow earning a 78% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter. One review summed it up: “It is not at all what you think it will be,” while another punter noted:

“Marshmallow is not your average summer camp slasher and a crucial reminder that the kids are definitely not alright.”

For those keen on something a bit different this weekend, Marshmallow is now streaming on AMC+ and is well worth a look for anyone after a fresh take on the genre.
