Season 2 of It: Welcome to Derry is set to dive into 1935, introducing younger versions of familiar faces and new characters, all set decades before the first season.

With the first season of It: Welcome to Derry wrapped up, fans are left wondering what’s next for the much-hyped HBO series. While a second season hasn’t officially been given the green light, the creative team already has a three-season arc in mind. Andy Muschietti, the show’s creator, has kept most details under wraps, but he’s let slip a few intriguing hints about what’s in store if the show returns.

In a recent chat, Muschietti shared,

We can only say the stuff that's already known, like it's in 1935, 27 years before season 1 and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books. It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters and some characters from this season as well, but younger versions of them.

That means the next chapter is set in the heart of the Great Depression, with the infamous Bradley Gang Massacre taking centre stage. This bloody event, where the whole town gets involved in a shootout, was touched on in the first season when an old car linked to the massacre was found. The films also gave a nod to it, with a mural the Losers’ Club stands in front of while patching up Ben Hanscom, and again in the sequel.

Returning Faces and New Blood

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit is that viewers will meet younger versions of some familiar faces. Rose, who’s become something of an expert on Pennywise and its tricks, is tipped to appear in her earlier years. There’s also a good chance we’ll see the parents of some of the new (or technically, older) Losers’ Club members. For instance, it’s now clear that Marge will eventually become Margaret Tozier, Richie Tozier’s mum. Who else might pop up is anyone’s guess, but it’s sure to keep punters guessing until the show airs.

Alongside these returning characters, a fresh batch of locals will be introduced, giving the story a new spin while tying it back to the original lore. The Depression-era setting is bound to bring a different flavour to the series, with the town’s struggles and secrets coming to the fore.

Looking Ahead to Season 3

While there’s no official word on a third season, the plan is already in place. The next instalment would jump back to 1908, another 27 years earlier, focusing on the Kitchener Ironworks disaster. This tragedy saw the factory blow up during an Easter egg hunt, claiming 102 lives—most of them children. The first season referenced this grim event when Dick Hallorann witnessed the body of a headless child during the Black Spot fire.

Each season seems set to peel back another layer of Derry’s dark history, with the timeline moving further into the past and unearthing more of the town’s secrets. The creators are keen to keep the momentum going, hoping to bring the next chapter to screens sooner rather than later.

What’s Next for Derry?

At this stage, there’s no release date for the next season, and the show’s future is still up in the air. But with a plan mapped out and plenty of story left to tell, fans have every reason to stay keen. Whether it’s the Depression-era drama or the chilling events of the early 1900s, there’s heaps more to discover in Derry’s haunted past.
