James Cameron reveals why a daring, intimate scene in Avatar 3 became his favourite, and how Oona Chaplin’s performance in this moment secured her role. Discover what made this scene so crucial.

James Cameron’s Avatar series has always been seen as a family-friendly adventure, but the third instalment takes a surprising turn. In the latest film, there’s a particularly intimate moment between Oona Chaplin’s Varang and Stephen Lang’s Quaritch that Cameron has singled out as his top pick from the new chapter. He described the scene as a ‘double seduction’, noting how Chaplin’s performance was absolutely captivating.

Director Stands Firm on Keeping the Scene

Despite the film running close to three and a half hours, editors were keen to cut the length of this scene. Cameron, however, wasn’t having a bar of it. He reportedly told the team,

‘Guys, you’re about to become unemployed — put it back, every line,’

making it clear he wouldn’t compromise. For Cameron, the moment was essential, not just for shock value, but for what it revealed about the characters. Both Chaplin and Lang delivered performances that, in his view, were too good to lose.

Chaplin herself had some doubts after filming, even considering asking Cameron for a reshoot. She felt the scene was vital to Varang’s backstory and wanted to do justice to the character’s trauma and resilience.

‘I got to call Jim, ask him to reshoot it. It’s such an important scene, her whole origin story is in there. I really wanted to honour her trauma and the resilience of this character in a way that did that story justice.’

Cameron reassured her, showing her the finished scene and telling her it was his favourite in the film.

Why This Moment Matters in the Story

What sets this encounter apart isn’t just the physicality, but the layers beneath. Both Varang and Quaritch are using the situation to push their own agendas, and the power dynamic shifts back and forth throughout. The tension comes from not knowing who’s really in control, with each character trying to outmanoeuvre the other.

Cameron praised Chaplin’s ability to move seamlessly between the different emotional beats, saying it was this quality that made her stand out from other actors considered for the role.

‘There are a lot of layers to what she’s doing there and the forces that are driving her, and Oona was able to move fluidly back and forth between those in a way that I wasn’t seeing with the others. I’m sure, in retrospect, I could have cast any of them. But my instinct is to always go with the actor that understands the character the best.’

Looking Ahead for the Franchise

With Fire & Ash now in cinemas, fans are already speculating about what Cameron has in store for the next film. The director’s commitment to character-driven moments, even when they push boundaries, suggests there’s plenty more to come. Punters are keen to see how Varang’s story develops and what new dynamics will emerge in the much-hyped fourth instalment.
