James Gunn has addressed speculation about the DCU Batman film, clarifying that the script for The Brave and the Bold is still in the works and not yet complete.

James Gunn, who heads up DC Studios, has put a stop to the latest chatter about the upcoming Batman film in the DC Universe. The project, known as The Brave and the Bold, is set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, the bloke behind It, and will feature Damian Wayne stepping in as Robin. Fans have been buzzing about whispers that the script was already wrapped up and that a 2028 release was locked in. Gunn, however, set the record straight on Threads, replying to a fan’s question with:

Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn't finished.

Given how little has been shared about The Brave and the Bold, this update probably won’t shock too many punters. Gunn himself mentioned last July, just before Superman hit the screens, that there wasn’t much to report.

There's really no new updates. I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't.

Elseworlds Batman Returns

While the DCU’s take on Batman is still in the early stages, fans won’t have to wait too long to see the Caped Crusader back in action. The Batman 2, with Robert Pattinson donning the cowl again and Matt Reeves in the director’s chair, is set for release on 1 October 2027. Sebastian Stan has joined the cast as Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson is on board in a role that’s being kept under wraps. Colin Farrell will be back as the Penguin, though he’s only popping up for a handful of scenes. This film sits outside the main DCU storyline, falling under the Elseworlds banner, so it won’t tie into Gunn and Peter Safran’s universe.

What’s Next for the DCU

Looking ahead, the next big thing for the DCU is Supergirl, marking Milly Alcock’s first solo outing as Kara Zor-El. After that, Lanterns is on the cards—a series for HBO that’ll shine a spotlight on the Green Lantern Corps. There’s plenty more in the pipeline, with a full slate of films and shows lined up for the DCU’s future.
