Johnny Depp is set for a major Hollywood return, but it’s not as Jack Sparrow. Find out which iconic character he’ll play next and how he’s rebuilding his career after years of legal battles.

After a lengthy and very public legal stoush with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is gearing up for a big return to the big screen. While many punters were hoping to see him don the hat and beads of Jack Sparrow again in the next Pirates of the Caribbean instalment, Depp’s next major gig is something quite different. He’s set to take on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a fresh adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, titled Ebenezer, with a release date locked in for 13 November 2026.

Back in the Spotlight with a Dickens Classic

This new take on Dickens’ tale promises a ghostly adventure through Victorian London, following Scrooge as he’s forced to reckon with his past, present, and what’s still to come. The film is being billed as a thrilling ghost story, and marks Depp’s first major studio project since he played Gellert Grindelwald in 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

It’s a significant move for Depp, who’s spent the last seven years fighting to clear his name and rebuild his reputation after a messy divorce and a string of court cases. Alongside Ebenezer, he’s also lined up to star with Penélope Cruz in the thriller Day Drinker, though that one’s still waiting on a release date.

Redemption Themes Hit Close to Home

Those close to Depp reckon this new role is a perfect fit, given everything he’s been through. One industry insider put it bluntly:

Most people’s memories are short. If you handle things correctly and have the talent, you can make a comeback. Johnny managed it spectacularly well – he kept a low profile after the settlement, focused on passion projects and family. He’s a gifted actor, and Ebenezer is the perfect part for him, especially with its themes of redemption.

Now splitting his time between Madrid and London, Depp is said to be keen to reclaim his spot in the film world, with a renewed sense of drive and determination. After years of headlines and setbacks, he’s looking to get his career back on track in a big way.

Dior Backs Depp’s Return

It’s not just the film industry that’s welcomed Depp back. After his defamation trial in Virginia wrapped up in 2022, with the jury awarding him $10.35 million in damages (and Heard getting $2 million on a separate claim), new opportunities started rolling in. One of the first was a renewed deal with Dior, who brought him back as the face of their Sauvage fragrance in a deal reportedly worth $20 million.

As another insider put it:

Few people have the reach and fanbase around the world that he does. There was no reason why, within a year, he shouldn’t have been cast in a major studio film after Dior welcomed him back.

With these new projects and endorsements, Depp seems set to make a proper return to the spotlight, and plenty of locals are watching to see how it all unfolds.
