Jon Snow Returns in 2027 — but Not to Game of Thrones as You Know It
HBO has ordered an animated Jon Snow spinoff series set in the Game of Thrones universe, bringing the fan-favorite back to screens in a new medium.
Jon Snow is suiting up again — this time as a playable lead in the newly announced strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. The developers say players will command Jon’s forces on the battlefield, positioning the character as a frontline leader rather than a background commander.
The release is now planned for 2027.
The team said the extra time is to hit their quality bar. A brief first look showed Jon rallying troops, a setup clearly nodding to the show’s Battle of the Bastards and the way men were willing to follow him into impossible odds.
Several other heavy hitters from the series are also slated to appear at launch. Confirmed characters include:
- Jon Snow — playable lead
- Daenerys Targaryen
- Jaime Lannister
- Tywin Lannister
The move gives fans another on-screen path back to Jon after HBO’s live-action sequel centered on the character was reportedly shelved earlier this year. It’s not yet clear if the game uses Kit Harington’s voice, but the character’s likeness is front and center.
On the book side, George R.R. Martin has not announced a publication date for The Winds of Winter, and as of July 2026 the novel remains unreleased.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is targeting a 2027 launch; platforms and a specific date are still to come.
