Kristen Stewart has hinted at the idea of directing a new version of Twilight, sparking excitement among fans eager to see her unique vision for the iconic vampire series.

Twilight enthusiasts have something new to chat about, as Kristen Stewart has floated the idea of helming a fresh adaptation of the beloved vampire saga. During a recent interview, Stewart was asked if she’d ever consider revisiting any of her earlier projects from behind the camera. With a grin, she responded,

I would love to readapt – yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I'm doing it, I'm committed,

making it clear she was at least half-joking, but the thought alone has set fans abuzz.

The conversation took place on the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where Stewart was recognised as one of the top directors to watch, following her directorial debut with The Chronology of Water. She admitted she’d been thinking about the first Twilight film lately, as it’s been popping up on telly quite a bit over the holidays. Stewart reflected on the original films, saying,

I love what all of the directors did with the movies, but they were so themselves and weird and kind of like squirrely and just so present in that time when they didn't really know what they were yet, like before they blew up. Imagine if we had, like, a huge budget and a bunch of love and support.

Looking Back at the Twilight Phenomenon

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novels, the Twilight films first hit screens in 2008. Stewart played Bella Swan, a teenager who moves to a rainy Washington town to live with her dad, only to fall for Edward Cullen, a vampire living with his adoptive family. The series ran for five films over five years, charting Bella and Edward’s relationship all the way to Bella’s own transformation into a vampire.

Each instalment in the saga had a different director at the helm. Catherine Hardwicke kicked things off, followed by Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon, who directed the final two chapters. Stewart’s hypothetical return as director wouldn’t be stepping on any toes, given the rotating roster of filmmakers who’ve already shaped the franchise.

Twilight’s Ongoing Popularity

The appetite for all things Twilight hasn’t faded. The films are set for a theatrical re-release in 2025, giving both old fans and newcomers a chance to experience the story on the big screen once more. Meanwhile, Netflix is working on an animated adaptation of Meyer’s latest Twilight novel, Midnight Sun, which retells the original story from Edward’s perspective.

With Stewart’s playful comments about directing a new version, the idea of a reimagined Twilight has captured the imagination of punters everywhere. Whether or not she’s serious, the prospect of seeing her creative spin on the saga is enough to get fans talking.
