Kristen Wiig opens up about the British sitcom that shaped her comedic style, her admiration for Ricky Gervais, and why she’s still keen to work with him again.

Kristen Wiig has carved out a unique spot for herself in the world of comedy, not just as a performer but as a writer and producer as well. While Saturday Night Live has long been a springboard for comedians to break into film, Wiig stands out among her generation for how she’s managed to branch out and make a real mark in the industry. Unlike the earlier days when SNL churned out film stars like Bill Murray and Adam Sandler, the 21st century hasn’t seen as many alumni make the leap. Will Ferrell and Bill Hader are rare exceptions, but Wiig’s knack for juggling multiple roles behind and in front of the camera has set her apart.

Hollywood hasn’t always been the friendliest place for women in comedy, but Wiig’s talent was impossible to ignore after she stole scenes in films like Knocked Up and Adventureland. Her breakout came with Bridesmaids, a raucous ensemble piece she both wrote and starred in. The film didn’t just rake in box office numbers as one of the highest-grossing R-rated comedies ever; it also earned her an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay. Despite all this, Wiig has stayed grounded, often giving credit to the comedians who’ve inspired her along the way.

Finding Inspiration in British Humour

In an interview with Women’s Health, Wiig singled out the original British version of The Office as the show that’s made her laugh the most.

“Ricky Gervais is beyond genius,”

she said.

“It’s truly the only show I’ve actually gone out and bought the DVDs of.”

While the American version starring Steve Carell has become a cultural staple, the UK original is still considered one of the sharpest and most daring sitcoms ever made. Where the US take is often seen as a comforting look at workplace friendships, Gervais’ version is much more biting and, at times, downright awkward—which, for Wiig, only adds to its appeal.

Gervais didn’t just star in the show; he co-wrote and co-created it with Stephen Merchant, another comedic heavyweight. Wiig’s own career has followed a similar path, with her taking on multiple creative roles in her projects. She’s spoken about how much she admires Gervais’ willingness to back himself and take creative risks, something she’s tried to emulate in her own work.

Crossing Paths with a Comedy Legend

Getting the chance to work alongside Gervais was a highlight for Wiig. She appeared with him in Ghost Town, a dark comedy that let her share the screen with someone she’d long looked up to. Since then, her career has only grown, with recent acclaim for her role in the Apple TV drama Palm Royale. She’s made it clear she had a great time working with Gervais and would jump at the chance to do it again if the opportunity came up.

Gervais, for his part, has continued to make waves with his stand-up specials, which are both celebrated and sometimes criticised for their deliberately provocative humour. Still, the idea of these two comedic minds teaming up again is something Wiig is definitely open to—whether it’s another guest spot or a brand new project altogether.
