Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell’s Fantasy Flop Climbs Netflix Charts
Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell’s 2025 fantasy film struggled at the box office, but its unexpected surge on Netflix is turning heads. Both stars are already moving on to bigger projects.
Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell have both fronted their fair share of blockbusters, but their 2025 fantasy flick, ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’, didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it hit cinemas last September. Despite the star power, the film was a commercial flop and copped a fair bit of stick from critics. Now, though, it’s found a second wind on Netflix, where it’s managed to sneak into the platform’s top ten, currently sitting at number seven.
Directed by Kogonada, the film was hyped up thanks to its A-list leads. The story follows two strangers who cross paths at a mate’s wedding and end up revisiting places from their past. While the premise sounded promising, it quickly became clear that even the best actors can only do so much with the material they’re given. The film’s reception largely depended on how much sentimentality punters could stomach.
From Black List Hopes to Box Office Blues
The script for ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ started out as an original entry on the Black List, a well-known collection of unproduced Hollywood scripts that’s churned out hits like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘The Revenant’. But as it turns out, some scripts might be better left on the shelf. When the film finally landed in cinemas, it was quickly labelled
“pretentious”
and many felt it cared more about showing off scenic backdrops than building any real spark between the leads.
Audiences weren’t much kinder, giving it a 58% score, while critics were even harsher at 37%. Plenty of viewers called it a
“lifeless bore.”
The numbers at the box office told the same story: the film only managed to rake in $20 million worldwide, falling well short of its $40 million budget. Not exactly a great look for a film with such big names attached.
Streaming Success and What’s Next for the Stars
Despite its rough start, the film has found a surprising audience on Netflix. Whether it’s curiosity or just the draw of Robbie and Farrell, it’s managed to climb the streaming charts, giving the project a bit of a redemption arc.
Meanwhile, both stars are already moving on to new ventures. Margot Robbie is set to star in Emerald Fennell’s take on ‘Wuthering Heights’ alongside Jacob Elordi, which is shaping up to be a bold reimagining of the classic. Colin Farrell, on the other hand, is gearing up to return as Oz Cobb, better known as Penguin, in ‘The Batman Part II’, following the success of his spin-off series on HBO Max. He was also lined up for another DC project, ‘Sgt. Rock’, but that one got the axe last year.
Behind the Scenes and Creative Team
The film’s production brought together a notable cast and crew, with Kogonada at the helm and Seth Reiss penning the script. Despite the picturesque locations and the promise of a heartfelt journey, the end result left many viewers cold. Still, its recent streaming success shows that sometimes, a film just needs to find the right audience at the right time.
