Mark Hamill wanted a scene with Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the Star Wars sequels, but director J.J. Abrams had other plans. Discover what happened behind the scenes.

Mark Hamill has shared that he was eager to film a scene alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher during the recent Star Wars sequels, but his hopes were dashed by director J.J. Abrams. While working on The Force Awakens, Hamill approached Abrams with a simple request: a brief moment on screen with the original trio.

I said, 'Aren't we going to have a moment where all 3 of us get together to raise the roof? It'll only take 30 seconds,'

Hamill recalled during a chat for The Hollywood Reporter’s Actor Roundtable. Abrams, however, wasn’t on board.

And JJ said, 'Well, Mark, it's not Luke's story anymore.'

Shifting the Spotlight

The new trilogy, including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, shifted focus to fresh faces like Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren. The original heroes took a back seat as the narrative moved towards the next generation of rebels. Still, many fans reckon a short reunion wouldn’t have thrown the story off course.

Timing was tight for any possible reunion. Han Solo, played by Ford, met his end at the hands of Kylo Ren in Episode 7. Luke’s fate was sealed in The Last Jedi, where he used the Force to help the Resistance and paid the ultimate price. Leia’s journey wrapped up in The Rise of Skywalker, closing the chapter for all three icons.

Behind the Director’s Decision

J.J. Abrams explained his approach to the sequels, saying the aim was to build on what came before while also delivering a story that stood on its own.

Working on this new movie has been as much about trying to set up elements of what is beyond what you're seeing as it has been about telling a story that will be satisfying in and of itself,

he said in an interview.

But it can't feel like a cop-out – like we're just setting things up and not resolving them.

For those keen to revisit the saga, the Star Wars sequel trilogy is available to stream on Disney Plus. There’s also plenty more on the horizon for fans, with new films and series in the works.
