Mark Wahlberg’s Gritty Sea Drama Sails onto Peacock in 2026
Mark Wahlberg’s 2000 disaster drama ‘The Perfect Storm’ joins Peacock’s streaming line-up from January 2026. The film, inspired by real events, follows a fishing crew’s fight for survival in a monstrous storm.
Back in the late 1990s, Mark Wahlberg was still carving out his place in the film industry, taking on roles in titles like Fear, Boogie Nights, and Three Kings. These gigs helped him get noticed, but it was Wolfgang Petersen’s disaster epic that really let him show off his dramatic chops. Released in 2000, The Perfect Storm quickly became a box office favourite, even if the critics were a bit divided on it.
The story centres on the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel that vanished during a brutal nor’easter in 1991. Adapted from Sebastian Junger’s book by William D. Wittliff, the film hit cinemas on 30 June 2000. It pulled in $41.3 million in its first weekend and eventually raked in $328 million worldwide, not bad considering its $120 million budget.
Streaming Debut and Star-Studded Cast
For a long while, punters could only rent or buy The Perfect Storm digitally. That changed on 1 January 2026, when it landed on Peacock’s streaming service. The cast is stacked, featuring George Clooney, Diane Lane, William Fichtner, Karen Allen, Bob Gunton, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and John C. Reilly alongside Wahlberg.
The film blends large-scale disaster with heavy drama, shining a light on the tough lives of working-class folks and the lengths they’ll go to for their families. The official synopsis puts it this way:
Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm tells the tale of the courageous men and women who risk their lives every working day, pitting their fishing boats and rescue vessels against the capricious forces of nature. Their worst fears are realised at sea on Halloween of 1991, when they are confronted by three raging weather fronts which unexpectedly collide to produce the greatest, fiercest storm in modern history.
Wahlberg’s Career and What’s Next
Since then, Wahlberg’s kept busy, lining up a string of new projects. He’s set to appear in Balls Up, By Any Means, and Weekend Warriors, though none of these have release dates just yet. In the meantime, fans can catch him in The Perfect Storm, now streaming for the first time on Peacock.
