Matthew McConaughey opens up about the one film role he wishes he hadn’t passed up, reflecting on missed opportunities and how they shaped his career.

Regret can be a tricky thing, especially in showbiz, but for Matthew McConaughey, there’s just one role he genuinely wishes he’d taken. Looking back, it’s hard to blame him. The bloke’s had his fair share of ups and downs, from being typecast in rom-coms to chasing more serious roles, and even having a crack at joining the Marvel universe as the Hulk—only to be knocked back. These days, he’s not fussed about chasing awards or paycheques. He’s got the freedom to pick and choose, only taking on projects that really grab him, and he’s not in any rush, having only taken on a handful of major roles in the past ten years.

Still, every actor has that one part that got away. For McConaughey, it’s the character Bud Exley in Curtis Hanson’s LA Confidential, a role that ended up launching Guy Pearce’s career. The year was 1997, and McConaughey was riding high after A Time to Kill, suddenly flooded with scripts. He ended up working with Spielberg on Amistad and Zemeckis on Contact—two massive names, but neither film set the box office alight. Meanwhile, LA Confidential was smashing it, earning heaps at the box office and picking up a couple of Oscars from ten nominations. To top it off, he’d also tried out for Titanic, but that one slipped through his fingers too, as it went on to become the biggest film ever.

Missed Chances and What Could Have Been

During a chat with Howard Stern, McConaughey admitted,

“That was the closest one. I saw the movie, and I was like, ‘I would have really liked to be a part of that.’”

He put his decision down to the sudden flood of offers after his breakout role, saying he had to knock back most of them. On paper, teaming up with Spielberg and Zemeckis seemed like a safer bet than working with Hanson, who was known for solid but not exactly groundbreaking films at the time. It’s easy to see why he made the call he did, but hindsight’s a funny thing.

McConaughey doesn’t seem the type to dwell on what-ifs, but it’s clear this one sticks with him. He reckons he wouldn’t go back and change things, even if he could, but there’s no denying that being part of LA Confidential could have sent his career—and Pearce’s—in a completely different direction.

Career Choices and Changing Priorities

After those near-misses, McConaughey’s career took a few twists. He became known for his laid-back charm in a string of romantic comedies, often poking fun at himself and rarely shying away from a shirtless scene. But as time went on, he shifted gears, focusing on roles that let him show off his range. The so-called ‘McConaissance’ saw him picking up more challenging parts, earning critical acclaim and even an Oscar along the way.

Now, with the luxury to be choosy, he’s not chasing the next big thing just for the sake of it. He’s happy to wait for the right script, and he’s not afraid to turn down offers that don’t feel right. That one missed opportunity, though, still lingers in the back of his mind—a reminder that even the biggest stars have moments they wish had played out differently.
