Melissa McCarthy has opened up about a distressing experience on a film set, describing how a toxic environment left her physically unwell and determined never to stay quiet about such behaviour again.

Comedy’s meant to be a good time, right? For most punters, a cracking comedy film is a sure-fire way to lift the mood. But as Melissa McCarthy knows all too well, the laughs on screen don’t always match what’s happening behind the scenes. McCarthy, who shot to fame on the sitcom Mike & Molly and cemented her place as a comedy heavyweight with Bridesmaids, has built a career on making audiences laugh. Still, not every project has been a barrel of laughs for her.

In a 2023 chat, McCarthy shared a grim story about one of her worst gigs. She described working under someone who created such a rough, aggressive atmosphere that it actually made her crook.

“I did work for someone once who ran such a volatile, hostile set that it made me physically ill,”

she recalled.

“There were people weeping, visibly so upset by this one person. And I think that’s why the manipulation worked, because to get to me, this person would fire people I loved, which kept me quiet. It was very effective. Then one day, I was like, ‘It stops today!’ I just kept saying to them, it stops, it stops. And I know now I’ll never keep quiet again.”

Standing Up Against Bullying

McCarthy didn’t spill the beans on which project or who was involved, and you can’t blame her for that. The incident happened before 2023, but could have been much earlier. What’s clear is that the experience left a mark. In 2013, she and her husband Ben Falcone kicked off their own production company. She’s made it clear that on their sets, bullying isn’t tolerated in any shape or form. It’s possible that this rough patch was the push they needed to start running their own show, though that’s just a guess.

There’s been a bit of speculation about which set she was talking about. Some reckon it might have been Mike & Molly, since the timing fits and the showrunner left in 2013. But that’s just one theory, and there’s no solid proof. Plus, the bloke in question had previously stood up for his cast when they copped flak about their weight, which doesn’t quite line up with McCarthy’s story.

Behind the Scenes Isn’t Always a Laugh

Whoever was responsible, McCarthy’s story is a reminder that working on a film isn’t always as fun as it looks. Even on sets where the end result is full of laughs, the day-to-day can be tough. She’s made it clear she won’t put up with that sort of behaviour again, and she’s not afraid to call it out if she sees it.

It’s a good reminder for anyone in the industry: a bit of decency goes a long way. The audience might only see the finished product, but for those making it, the atmosphere on set can make all the difference.
