Mike Myers Reveals His Most Overlooked Character Yet
Mike Myers opens up about his most underrated role, Lord Lordington from The Pentaverate, a character few recall but one he holds closest to his heart.
Mike Myers has long been a fixture in pop culture, with a handful of iconic characters that have left a lasting mark. From Wayne Campbell and Austin Powers to Dr Evil and the voice of Shrek, these roles have cemented his place in the comedy hall of fame. Even now, with Myers mostly stepping back from the limelight, those four faces remain the ones most punters remember. Shrek, in particular, could keep going for years, given it only needs Myers in a booth, putting on that Scottish accent. Wayne’s World even made a comeback in a few promos not too long ago. But as for Austin Powers, it’s been ages since he donned the wig and teeth, and while some might be keen for another go, it’s a risky move. Not everyone’s eager to see a bloke in his sixties trying to recapture that old magic, and it could easily fall flat.
Still, Myers’ career isn’t just about those big names. His time on Saturday Night Live saw him take on a stack of different personas, showing he’s no one-trick pony. There’s Fat Bastard, the Mackenzie clan from So I Married an Axe Murderer, Maurice Pitka from The Love Guru, Dr Seuss’ Cat in the Hat, and even a stint hosting The Gong Show in disguise. None of these quite hit the same heights as his most famous parts, though Fat Bastard had his moments. Yet, when it comes to the role he reckons is most overlooked, it’s none of these.
The Pentaverate: A Hidden Gem
Myers points to Lord Lordington from The Pentaverate, a Netflix series that barely made a ripple when it dropped. Despite the streaming giant’s usual recipe for success—big star, bold concept—the show didn’t crack the top ten in the US and was quickly forgotten. Myers himself played a string of characters in the series, but Lord Lordington stands out as his personal favourite.
He shared,
“I did a character called Lord Lordington, who’s the head of the Pentaverate, this secret organisation, and I think it’s my favourite character. It’s sort of everything, growing up in an English household, there’s a certain English wisdom that we’re proud of, that we broke the German codes, time zones, figuring out latitude, all those Englishy things, and this character embodied all of that.”
Characters Lost in the Shuffle
In The Pentaverate, Myers didn’t just stop at Lord Lordington. He also transformed into Ken Scarborough, Anthony Lansdowne, Rex Smith, Bruce Baldwin, Mishu Ivanov, Shep Gordon, and Jason Eccleston. But with so few people tuning in, these characters barely registered with audiences. Myers admits he wishes things were different, saying,
“I wish people would go, ‘Hey, Lord Lordington!’”
But as it stands, the character remains largely unrecognised, tucked away in a show that most have already forgotten.
