Michelle Obama has shared that her family were set to meet Rob and Michele Reiner on the night of their shocking deaths. The couple were found dead in Los Angeles, with their son now facing murder charges.

Michelle Obama has spoken out about the heartbreaking loss of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, revealing that she and her family were meant to catch up with the couple on the very night they died. The Reiners, aged 78 and 68, were discovered at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on 14 December, both suffering injuries believed to be from a knife attack. Their daughter, Romy, identified them at the scene.

Police confirmed the following day that the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with murder, with bail set at $4 million. The news has left many in shock, especially those close to the family.

Michelle Obama’s Emotional Tribute

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Michelle Obama, who has been friends with the Reiners for years, opened up about the loss. She told the host,

“We were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night.”

She went on to say,

“We’ve known them for many, many years.”

Michelle also took a moment to address comments made by Donald Trump, who had blamed Rob Reiner’s death on what he called “Trump derangement syndrome.” She responded,

“Let me just say this. Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.”

She added,

“They are not deranged or crazed. What they have always been are passionate people who, in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on, they were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about.”

Remembering the Reiners’ Legacy

Michelle described the couple as deeply committed to their family, their country, and to fairness. She said,

“And they cared about their family. And they cared about this country. And they cared about fairness and equity. And that is the truth. I DO know them.”

Barack Obama also released a statement on behalf of his family, expressing their grief and respect for the Reiners. He wrote,

“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.”

He continued,

“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

Jimmy Kimmel, hosting the show, also paid his respects to Rob Reiner, criticising Trump’s remarks as “hateful.” The investigation into the deaths continues, with the community and those who knew the Reiners still coming to terms with the loss.
