A fresh take on the cult action film Point Break is heading to AMC as a TV series, promising a new story set decades after the original. Find out what’s in store and if Keanu Reeves could make a comeback.

AMC is gearing up to bring a new chapter to the world of Point Break, the action-packed classic that helped launch Keanu Reeves as a household name. The upcoming series, penned and executive produced by David Kalstein—who recently worked on Amazon’s Butterfly—will see Alcon’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts also on board as executive producers. Rather than rehashing the 2015 remake, which many punters reckon didn’t quite hit the mark, this project will carve out its own path, sticking to the universe established by the original film.

The original Point Break scored a solid 7.3 on IMDb and holds a 68% Tomatometer rating, with a 79% audience score. The film, running for just over two hours, is still fondly remembered for its blend of surfing, heists, and high-octane action. The new series aims to build on that legacy, but with a fresh story and a new generation of characters.

New Faces, Old Ties: The Story Continues

Unlike many legacy sequels that chase box office glory, this one’s heading straight to telly. Details are still under wraps, but what’s known is that the story will centre on a new crew of heist specialists, somehow linked to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang from the original. Set 35 years after the events that saw the Ex-Presidents dismantled and Bodhi’s fate sealed, the series will explore how the past still echoes in the present.

With AMC reportedly winning the rights after a fierce bidding war, expectations are high for a production that won’t skimp on scale or ambition. The big question on everyone’s mind: will we see any familiar faces from the original, or is this a clean slate?

Keanu Reeves: Will Johnny Utah Make a Comeback?

When it comes to action legends, Reeves’ name is often thrown around alongside the likes of The Matrix, Speed, and, more recently, John Wick. But for many, Point Break remains one of his most entertaining outings, with its unique mix of surfing culture and criminal escapades. The idea of a new series set in this world has plenty of locals keen to see what’s next.

Johnny Utah, Reeves’ character, survived the original film, so a return—maybe even just a cameo—doesn’t seem out of the question. However, when asked about joining the 2015 reboot, Reeves was pretty clear:

“I won’t be appearing in the Point Break remake.”

That said, the new series isn’t a reboot but a continuation, so if the script’s up to scratch, there’s always a chance he could pop up.

Legacy and Streaming

With the Ex-Presidents gang’s story seemingly wrapped up, the series has the freedom to chart new territory while still tipping its hat to the original. Fans are already speculating about how the show will weave in nods to the past and whether any old mates might return for another round.

If you’re keen to revisit where it all began, Point Break is currently streaming on Peacock for viewers in the States.
