After a limited screening, Dune: Part Three sparked the kind of buzz that turns into ticket lines.

The first people to see Dune: Part Three weren’t a massive crowd—just intimate, invite-only screenings this past week—but the word out of those rooms has been strikingly upbeat. Per Variety’s reporting on those early showings, reactions have been “very positive,” with viewers responding to the film’s darker, more psychological approach as it tackles the thornier, more philosophical terrain of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah.

Awards chatter starts early

Variety awards editor Clayton Davis is already penciling the movie in as a major Oscar contender. The outlet also notes it could land a Best Picture slot at the Golden Globes. And industry watcher Jeff Sneider has framed the upcoming Best Picture race as a possible heavyweight bout between Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey, if both deliver as expected.

Box office heat

On the business side, forecasts point to the strongest opening yet for the franchise. Advance sales and early tracking suggest the threequel could blow past the last film’s debut.

  • More than $10 million in early advance ticket sales so far
  • Projected $100–$130 million domestic opening weekend
  • About $230 million expected worldwide over opening weekend
  • Dune: Part Two opened to $82.5 million domestically
  • Neither of the first two films has crossed $1 billion worldwide
Early advance ticket sales have already topped $10 million.

With those projections, analysts say this third entry has a real shot at becoming the franchise’s first billion-dollar global hit—assuming strong legs beyond opening weekend.

Prediction markets are echoing the optimism: on Polymarket, traders currently give the film a 96% chance of earning an 80% or higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Over on Kalshi, the betting leans toward Dune: Part Three posting a higher Tomatometer than an Avengers film slated to open the same day.

Formal reviews are still under wraps until release, but audiences won’t have to wait long. Dune: Part Three opens in theaters on December 18.
