Rian Johnson Shuts Down Knives Out and Muppets Crossover Hopes
Rian Johnson’s latest Knives Out film is making waves, but the director isn’t keen on mixing the franchise with the Muppets, despite fans’ calls for a crossover.
Rian Johnson is riding high with his latest Knives Out instalment, as Daniel Craig returns for a third time as the sharp-witted Benoit Blanc. The film’s limited cinema run has already drawn plenty of praise, and anticipation is building for its upcoming release on Netflix. With the franchise’s popularity showing no signs of slowing, fans are already speculating about what could be next for the series.
Fans Dream of a Muppet Mash-Up
One idea that’s been floating around for a while is a crossover between Knives Out and the Muppets. It’s a suggestion that’s gained traction online, with many punters keen to see how the quirky puppets would fit into Johnson’s whodunit world. Despite the enthusiasm, Johnson himself isn’t convinced it would work. He’s been pretty clear that, while the thought is amusing, he doesn’t reckon it would gel with the tone he’s set for the franchise.
Why the Crossover Isn’t on the Cards
Johnson has addressed the idea directly, saying he’s not sure how the two worlds could blend without losing what makes each unique.
“It’s a fun idea, but I just don’t see how you could pull it off without it feeling like a bit of a pisstake,”
he’s said in interviews. The director seems to appreciate the humour in the suggestion, but he’s not about to take the mickey out of his own creation just for a laugh.
Sesame Street’s Take on the Concept
Interestingly, while Johnson is hesitant, something similar has already happened elsewhere. Sesame Street, known for its playful parodies, recently did its own spin on the murder mystery genre with a sketch called ‘Forks Out’. The segment poked fun at the tropes of detective stories, showing that there’s room for a bit of crossover fun – just maybe not in the way fans were hoping for with Knives Out and the Muppets.
