Ryan Hurst Steps Into Kratos’ Boots for God of War Series
Amazon’s God of War adaptation has found its Kratos in Ryan Hurst, who’s shared his excitement about taking on the iconic role. Find out what makes this casting so special.
This week’s been a big one for fans of game-to-screen adaptations. Hot on the heels of Sophie Turner gearing up as Lara Croft, Amazon has revealed who’ll be swinging the Leviathan Axe in their much-hyped God of War series. Ryan Hurst, best known for his stint on Sons of Anarchy, is set to play the live-action version of the Ghost of Sparta. The show’s being written by Ronald D. Moore, the bloke behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, so expectations are running high among punters.
Hurst isn’t exactly a stranger to the world of Norse gods and epic battles. He previously faced off against Kratos as Thor in God of War: Ragnarok, so he’s well-versed in the franchise’s brutal universe. Now, he’s swapping sides and picking up the axe himself. After the casting news broke, Hurst jumped on Instagram to share his thoughts, posting a snap of himself in front of a massive screen.
“Used to play as him. Now I get to be him,”
he wrote.
“Grateful to pick up the axe, and honoured by the fans who made this story legendary.”
Passing the Axe
Christopher Judge, who brought Kratos to life in the 2018 game and led the character’s emotional journey, has given Hurst his stamp of approval. Judge, who’s become a fan favourite for his take on the character, didn’t hold back his support.
“Congrats, Ryan!!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!!”
he posted, referencing one of Kratos’ most iconic lines from the games. It’s a rare moment of camaraderie between two actors who’ve both left their mark on the same legendary figure.
With Hurst stepping into the role, fans are keen to see how he’ll bring his own spin to the character. The casting has sparked plenty of chatter online, with many excited to see how the series will tackle the story’s mix of myth, action, and family drama. There’s no word yet on when the show will hit screens, but anticipation is building fast.
What’s Next for God of War Fans?
While the release date remains under wraps, there’s no shortage of buzz around the project. The creative team is keeping details close to their chest, but with a cast and crew like this, expectations are sky-high. In the meantime, there’s a stack of other shows lined up for 2026 to keep viewers busy while they wait for Kratos’ next adventure.
