Scarlett Johansson’s possible leap from Marvel to DCU has fans buzzing. Which iconic Gotham character could she play in the next Batman film? Find out what’s got everyone talking.

After years of impressing punters as Black Widow in the Marvel films, Scarlett Johansson is now making waves with talk of her joining the DC Universe. The Jojo Rabbit star is reportedly in discussions to appear in the next chapter of Matt Reeves’ Batman series, which will follow up the 2022 release. The news has set comic book fans abuzz, with speculation running wild about which character Johansson might take on.

Fans Dream Up Roles for Johansson

As soon as word got out about Johansson’s potential involvement in the Robert Pattinson-led sequel, fans wasted no time tossing around their dream castings. The most popular pick? Poison Ivy. Known for her ability to control plants and her immunity to toxins, Poison Ivy is a classic Gotham villain. Uma Thurman previously played the role in the 1997 Batman & Robin, and she’s also famous for her work in Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill films.

Other suggestions from the fanbase include Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, and even Zatanna. Still, with new updates about the sequel, the situation has become a bit more complicated.

Catwoman’s Exit and New Speculation

While Johansson’s possible casting has stirred up excitement, there’s also news that Zoe Kravitz, who played Catwoman in the last film, won’t be returning. This update comes from sources close to the production. Given Catwoman’s major role in the previous story, some reckon Johansson could be stepping into that part. It’s entirely possible the Lost in Translation actress will be the new face of Catwoman in the much-hyped sequel, though her role is still being kept under wraps.

With details about her character tightly guarded, it’s anyone’s guess who Johansson will portray in the next Gotham tale.

Production Kicks Off for the Next Batman

Back in November, it was reported that the next Batman film will start pre-production in January 2026, after a five-year wait. Principal photography is set to begin on the first of January at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London.

The script for the sequel is finished, with director Matt Reeves saying he’s proud of the work. He shared,

Rob was super excited, I feel really excited about the idea that it’s gonna be, that we feel like we can reach farther and do even more than we did in the first one. And, I’m really excited to get back together with everybody that we made the movie with, and, it’s gonna be fun.

With production ramping up, the film is expected to hit cinemas on 1 October 2027. The previous entry, released in March 2022, scored 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb and earned high marks on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Batman is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
