Sigourney Weaver Joins Amazon’s Tomb Raider Series with Sophie Turner

Amazon’s fresh take on Tomb Raider is picking up pace, with word that Sigourney Weaver is in talks to join the cast. While there’s no word yet on which character she’ll play, Weaver would be starring alongside Sophie Turner, who’s set to step into Lara Croft’s boots for the series. The show is being penned and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Chad Hodge sharing showrunner and executive producer duties.

Big Names, Big Ambitions

Weaver’s no stranger to iconic roles. She’s best known for playing Ellen Ripley in the Alien films, and she’s also set to appear in the Star Wars universe next year with The Mandalorian and Grogu. On top of that, she’s back as Dr. Grace Augustine and the Na’vi youngster Kiri in James Cameron’s Avatar series. Her next appearance as Kiri is lined up for Avatar: Fire and Ash, hitting cinemas on 19 December.

The Tomb Raider project was first announced in 2023, but by April 2025, rumours swirled that it had been canned. That turned out to be off the mark, as Sophie Turner’s casting was confirmed and filming is now scheduled for 2026. The production company, Story Kitchen, says the aim is to

“reinvent the franchise on a massive scale, interconnecting a new live-action television series and video games into a unified storytelling universe.”
