Simu Liu Teases a Wiser Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday
Simu Liu hints at a more mature and confident Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday, showing how the hero has changed since his last outing.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stood out as a breath of fresh air in the Marvel line-up after Endgame, so it’s no wonder fans have been hanging out for his return. The wait’s nearly over, with the martial arts hero set to join the action in Avengers: Doomsday. Simu Liu, who plays the lead, has given a few hints about what to expect from his character’s next chapter.
In a recent chat, Liu shared a bit about where Shang-Chi’s head is at when he reappears.
“He’s older,” Liu explained. “I’m older, so getting to bring a little bit more of a quality of self-assurance is always great, especially because Shang was such a fish out of water. There’s a little bit of a jump in time, so I think we’ll meet him at a place where he’s feeling a little more lived in with who he is and his responsibilities.”
It sounds like the bloke’s had time to settle into his role, and punters can expect a version of the hero who’s more at ease with himself and the weight he carries.
Shang-Chi’s Growth and Newfound Confidence
Shang-Chi’s first outing saw him thrown into the deep end, but this time around, Liu reckons the character’s got a firmer grip on things. The time skip between films means we’ll see a more seasoned fighter, not just in terms of skills but in how he handles the chaos around him. That sense of being a ‘fish out of water’ is fading, replaced by a bloke who’s comfortable in his own skin.
Liu’s own experience seems to mirror his character’s journey. He’s keen to bring a bit more maturity and confidence to the role, reflecting both his and Shang-Chi’s growth since the last film. The actor’s clearly enjoying the chance to show a different side of the hero, one that’s shaped by the challenges he’s faced and the lessons he’s learnt along the way.
Keeping Secrets and Looking Ahead
Of course, with a film as much-hyped as Avengers: Doomsday, Liu’s been careful not to let any spoilers slip.
“I never know when something I say is going to get picked up into a soundbite,” he said. “I think I was freezing cold on the rooftop of the Empire State Building, and they were like, ‘What about his costume?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, it’s new.’ It just became an unstoppable maelstrom of messed-up lines. I am very reserved about what to say about it now.”
Even with the odd behind-the-scenes snap making the rounds, he’s keeping tight-lipped about the details.
For now, fans will have to wait for Marvel Studios to give the green light on more info. Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit cinemas on 18 December 2026, and until then, all eyes are on what’s next for Shang-Chi and his fellow heroes.
