Rumours swirl as Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are tipped to clash in the next Avengers film. Find out what’s fuelling the hype and how their comic book history could shape the big screen battle.

Word is spreading among Marvel fans that two of the franchise’s most iconic heroes could be facing off in the much-hyped Avengers: Doomsday. According to Daniel Richtman, who’s been on the money with Marvel scoops before, Tobey Maguire’s web-slinger and Hugh Jackman’s adamantium-clawed mutant are set to go head-to-head in the upcoming film. The buzz has only grown after Richtman posted a new image on X, hinting that this clash won’t be a walk in the park for either hero.

Fans had previously guessed Maguire might play a big part in Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man outing, but the latest updates suggest neither Maguire nor Andrew Garfield will be joining Holland this time. While the fate of a fourth Maguire-led Spider-Man film is still up in the air, Richtman reckons Maguire will be back for Doomsday, sharing the screen with Jackman.

Comic Book Clashes: Spidey vs Logan

Marvel’s history books are full of run-ins between these two. Back in 1987, Spider-Man and Wolverine butted heads in a one-shot, and more recently, Jason Aaron and Adam Kubert’s Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine series saw the pair at odds again. The latest run, Spider-Man & Wolverine (2025) by Marc Guggenheim and Kaare Andrews, has already delivered a proper dust-up between the two in its second issue.

In that story, the duo are on a mission to recover the Janus Directory, a list of double agents. Wolverine fends off the baddies, while Spider-Man nabs the directory. When Peter stumbles across his parents’ names, he digs deeper and finds a video revealing their fate. Turns out, a less-than-friendly Logan was on the same flight as Peter’s folks, and it’s revealed Wolverine was responsible for their deaths. Peter, not keen to hear Logan’s side, lashes out, and Wolverine ends up impaling him with his claws. The fallout left fans wondering if the film will echo this intense rivalry.

What Maguire and Jackman Bring to Doomsday

Maguire’s stint as the original big-screen Spider-Man is still a favourite for heaps of fans. His cameo in No Way Home sent punters wild, and the film’s box office haul proved just how much locals wanted to see him back in the suit. Calls for a fourth Maguire Spider-Man film have never really died down, and his return to the MCU was a real treat for long-time followers.

Jackman, meanwhile, had said he was done with Wolverine, but a bit of Marvel magic (and some nudging from Ryan Reynolds) brought him back for Deadpool & Wolverine. The film smashed records for R-rated releases, and Jackman’s return didn’t just trade on nostalgia—it gave fans a new side to the character, especially in his scenes with X-23.

Looking Ahead to Avengers: Doomsday

Jackman recently hinted on The Graham Norton Show that he’s not ruling out another go as Wolverine in an Avengers film, saying,

“Maybe. I’m never saying ‘never’ ever again”

. With both Maguire and Jackman rumoured to be back, fans are keen to see how their on-screen clash will play out, especially given their tangled comic book history. Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit Aussie cinemas on 18 December 2026.
