Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set to Unleash Grey Hulk
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is gearing up for a massive Marvel crossover, with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher joining the fray. But a surprising twist awaits fans—find out what’s in store.
Marvel’s next big-screen outing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is shaping up to be a proper crossover, bringing together some of the universe’s heavy hitters. Mark Ruffalo is back as Hulk, and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is set to make waves alongside the web-slinger. While the finer details are still under wraps, word is that Punisher and Spidey will be teaming up to take on a version of Hulk we haven’t seen before.
But don’t expect the usual green giant or even the Professor Hulk from previous films. If the latest whispers are on the money, this time it’s a more jaded, world-weary take on the character—one that nearly made it into Avengers: Age of Ultron but was left on the cutting room floor.
Grey Hulk: A Different Beast
Unlike the familiar rage-fuelled brute, Grey Hulk is a side of Bruce Banner that’s driven by darker impulses—think cynicism, bitterness, and a need to be in charge. He’s not as physically powerful as the classic version, but what he lacks in brute force, he makes up for in cunning and a lack of moral restraint. This makes him a much more unpredictable threat.
There was almost a moment in Age of Ultron where Hulk would’ve turned grey during the Hulkbuster scrap, but in the end, the team decided to stick with the green. As one of the effects crew put it,
‘Initially, Hulk was actually planned to turn grey when he’s angry Hulk in the Hulkbuster sequence but hey, everybody wanted the green guy. So, in the end, ILM just changed his eyes to make them look more sullen when he’s under the control of Scarlet Witch.’
With talk that Hulk will be pushed further than ever before in Brand New Day, the idea of seeing Grey Hulk on screen doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
Punisher’s Role in the Chaos
With the film said to be taking a more street-level approach, it makes sense for Frank Castle to get involved if a loose cannon like Grey Hulk is on the rampage. Punisher’s not one to shy away from using force, especially if innocent lives are at stake, while Peter Parker’s always been the type to avoid lethal measures—especially when it comes to mates.
Bernthal’s Punisher is rumoured to have more screen time than any of the other heroes this time around, and the character’s tone is set to shift compared to his previous, grittier outings. As Kevin Feige put it,
‘When Punisher is in the Spider-Man movie, it’ll be a different tonality.’
If these reports pan out, Ruffalo’s Hulk could finally get a proper spotlight after being sidelined since Endgame.
