Sydney Sweeney Scores Big with 'The Housemaid' Success
Sydney Sweeney bounces back in 2025 as Paul Feig’s thriller 'The Housemaid' smashes her previous box office records, with a sequel now in the works after a string of flops.
Sydney Sweeney has managed to flip her fortunes in 2025, thanks to her role in Paul Feig’s latest thriller, The Housemaid. After a rough patch with three films that didn’t exactly set the box office alight, Sweeney found herself sharing the screen with Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar in this suspenseful flick—and it’s paid off in spades.
Since its release last month, The Housemaid has overtaken Sweeney’s previous best as a leading lady, Anyone But You, which she starred in alongside Glen Powell back in 2023. That romantic comedy looked like it would set her up for a winning streak, pulling in over $88 million in the States, but things didn’t quite pan out as expected. Now, with The Housemaid closing in on $90 million domestically in just its fourth weekend, and a worldwide total of $150 million within reach, a follow-up is already on the cards. Sweeney’s career trajectory has well and truly shifted.
Box Office Woes and a Turnaround
Heading into 2025, Sweeney was tipped for a massive year, with Americana, Eden, and Christy all hitting cinemas in quick succession before The Housemaid capped things off. Unfortunately, those first three films didn’t draw crowds, even though Americana and Eden later found their audience on streaming platforms. Despite the rocky start, The Housemaid’s strong performance at the box office has more than made up for it, and there’s every chance its run will get another boost once it lands on VOD and streaming services in the coming months.
Sequel Confirmed: The Housemaid 2
While Freida McFadden’s original novel has two sequels, it wasn’t a given that the film would kick off a franchise. There were doubts about whether the story would translate into a series, especially since director Paul Feig is known for steering clear of sequels. Still, after having a blast making something outside his usual comedic fare, it looks like he’s been convinced to return for another round.
Feig shared his thoughts on the experience, saying:
Getting to mess with an audience this much? How can you turn that down? Usually, my films have some kind of twist in them. Some are bigger than others, but I like to fool an audience and entertain them at the same time. And I like how extreme this film gets. I'm a maximalist; I like things to be playing at 11. It was just all there. The source material is so popular anyway, so you know you've got a built-in audience. But more than that, it's having this amazing blueprint that Freida McFadden wrote. And just getting to cast amazing actors in it, and take it on.
Sweeney’s Comeback and What’s Next
Whatever happens with the next instalment, Sweeney can finally breathe easy after breaking her streak of underperformers. The Housemaid is still screening in cinemas, and punters can look forward to catching it on VOD and streaming soon.
