Timothée Chalamet nabs the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the 83rd ceremony, thanks to his standout role in Marty Supreme. Find out what set his performance apart.

At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, Timothée Chalamet walked away with the gong for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, recognised for his performance as Marty Mauser, a ping-pong-obsessed schemer, in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme. The part has been a long-term commitment for Chalamet, who’s spent the better part of seven years getting into character. He recently let slip that he carted a ping-pong table with him wherever he went:

“Everything I was working on, it was this secret: I had a table in London while I was making Wonka. On Dune 2, I had a table in Budapest, Jordan. I had a table in Abu Dhabi.”

Chalamet faced stiff competition in the category, with Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), George Clooney (Jay Kelly), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), Lee Byung-Hun (No Other Choice), and Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another) all in the running. When he took to the stage, Chalamet was quick to acknowledge the calibre of his fellow nominees, saying,

“This category is stacked. I look up to all of you, thank you… To Josh Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for this portrait, for your mind, for your worldview.”

Dedication Behind the Scenes

Chalamet’s commitment to the role went well beyond the script. He made a habit of setting up a ping-pong table on every set he worked on, whether he was filming in London, Budapest, Jordan, or Abu Dhabi. This dedication paid off, with his portrayal of Marty Mauser earning not just the Golden Globe, but also a Critics’ Choice Award.

During his Critics’ Choice acceptance, Chalamet made a point of thanking his partner, Kylie Jenner, for her support:

“Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I love you, I couldn’t do this without you.”

He echoed this gratitude at the Globes, adding,

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter for my parents, for my partner, I love you.”

Chasing Greatness

This latest win is another notch in Chalamet’s belt as he continues to chase his ambitions. At the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards, he was upfront about his goals:

“I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats.”

Marty Supreme had its world premiere on 6 October at the New York Film Festival, surprising punters with an unannounced screening. Safdie and Chalamet introduced the film, and after the credits rolled, co-stars like Tyler, the Creator and Gwyneth Paltrow joined them for a quick chat with the audience.
