Universal became the first studio to pass five billion dollars at the 2026 global box office. Nearly two thirds of that money came from outside North America, and the studio's own announcement undersells one of its biggest films by sixty million dollars.

Universal crossed $5 billion worldwide on 25 September, the first studio to do it in 2026. The split is the part worth stopping on: $1.788 billion domestic and $3.218 billion international.

That is 64 per cent of the total earned outside the United States and Canada, on a milestone that has been written up almost everywhere as a Hollywood story.

The film that did it is a Christopher Nolan picture that plays better abroad

The Odyssey has taken $1.677 billion worldwide and is now the biggest film in Universal's history. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael each crossed a billion. Minions & Monsters sits eighth globally for the year.

Three of the only five films to pass $1 billion anywhere in 2026 are Universal's. The studio has topped the global weekend chart eleven times this year.

None of that is in dispute. What is worth flagging is the framing: a studio whose international business is nearly twice its domestic one is being described in terms of a North American record.

Universal's own release undersells Obsession by about sixty million dollars

The announcement notes that Obsession "crossed $200 million" and is now Focus Features' highest-grossing film ever.

Both halves are true and the first is stale. The Numbers has Obsession at $263.5 million domestic and roughly $517 million worldwide; Box Office Mojo has the worldwide figure nearer $519 million. A $750,000 horror film from a first-time feature director has made something in the region of seven hundred times its negative cost, and its own distributor's parent company rounded it down to a threshold it passed months ago.

Press releases pick the number that fits the sentence. This one needed a Focus record, found the cleanest one, and left the bigger number on the table.

"First studio to five billion" is not "first time"

The release is precise about this and the coverage mostly is not. Universal has passed $5 billion in a calendar year three times. What happened on 25 September is that it got there first in 2026, in September rather than in November.

The distinction matters because "first studio to reach the milestone" reads as a historic first to anyone not counting, and it is a pace record rather than a total one.

The numbers, as published

  • Global total: $5 billion, reached 25 September 2026.
  • Domestic: $1.788 billion. International: $3.218 billion.
  • The Odyssey: $1.677 billion worldwide, the studio's biggest film ever.
  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael: over $1 billion each.
  • Minions & Monsters: eighth globally for the year.
  • Obsession (Focus Features): stated as over $200 million; databases have it near $517 million worldwide.
  • Eleven number-one global weekends in 2026.

What is still unknown

What any of it cost. Universal publishes grosses and not budgets, and The Odyssey in particular is a film whose economics nobody outside the studio can model. Whether the $5 billion figure includes Focus and Illumination consistently with how rivals count their own labels. And whether a studio can do this again in a year without a Nolan release, which is the question the eleven number-one weekends do not answer.

Two thirds of the biggest year any studio has had in 2026 was earned in cinemas outside North America. The press release has the figure in it. Almost nobody printed that line.
