Vin Diesel Unveils Sequel Title and Story for Witch Hunter Return
A decade after the original, Vin Diesel confirms a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, sharing its new title and first plot details. Kaulder the Immortal – The Lion’s Oath is set to pick up the story of the ageless witch hunter.
After ten years on the backburner, Vin Diesel’s fantasy action flick is finally getting a follow-up, thanks to a recent surge in popularity on streaming platforms. Diesel has now jumped online to spill the beans on the sequel’s name and what punters can expect from the next chapter.
The 2015 film, directed by Breck Eisner and penned by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless, threw together a wild mix of action and fantasy, with Diesel front and centre. The cast included Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, Michael Caine, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Julie Engelbrecht. Diesel played Kaulder, a bloke cursed with immortality, still hunting witches in the present day, centuries after his original run-in with dark magic. While Diesel was clearly passionate about the project—drawing inspiration from his own Dungeons & Dragons sessions—the film didn’t exactly win over critics, landing a rough 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and pulling in $146.9 million at the box office. Still, with a new wave of fans discovering it online, the sequel is officially underway, and Diesel has started dropping hints.
Kaulder’s Next Chapter: Old Debts and Familiar Faces
Diesel took to Instagram to post a snap of the script’s cover and first page, revealing the sequel’s title: Kaulder the Immortal – The Lion’s Oath. He included a telling line:
“Some debts take centuries to pay.”
That’s a pretty clear pointer to where the story’s heading.
The script’s opening scene has Kaulder chatting with “Young Dolan”, a nod to Michael Caine’s character, the 36th Dolan, who’s been Kaulder’s right-hand man in keeping witches in check. Word is, Michael Caine is coming out of retirement to reprise his role, and his character is set to play a major part in the new story. The intro then jumps forward by 80 years, which could mean we’ll see a younger version of Caine’s character in a flashback—maybe with a bit of digital trickery.
Streaming Success Sparks Sequel
Diesel’s been keen to revisit this world for a while, and now it’s happening, thanks to the film’s unexpected streaming success. Adam Fogelsen, who heads up Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, recently confirmed the sequel is moving ahead, crediting the film’s growing fanbase for making it possible.
He said,
“The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favourite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I'm thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”
What’s Next for Kaulder?
With the sequel’s title and first plot teasers out in the open, fans are left to wonder what debts Kaulder will be settling this time around. The return of Michael Caine and the promise of a story spanning centuries suggest there’s plenty more to explore in this world of witches and immortals. For now, Diesel’s reveal has set the stage for a much-anticipated return to the supernatural action that made the original a cult favourite among Aussie viewers and beyond.
