What the doc covers
At the center is NXIVM, which began as a self-improvement program and, according to former members featured in the series, morphed into something far more troubling. The docuseries follows whistleblowers as they recount allegations of manipulation and psychological control that led to criminal investigations surrounding the group’s founder, Keith Raniere.
Instead of reenactments, the show builds its case through extensive interviews, archival recordings, courtroom footage, and years of behind-the-scenes material captured by people who once believed in NXIVM’s mission. The result feels like an investigation unfolding in real time, with revelations landing piece by piece.
Originally released by HBO and directed by Academy Award nominees Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, the series spans two seasons: the first premiered in 2020, and the second followed in 2022.
