Paul Mescal Urges Fans to Avoid Beatles Research Before Biopics
Paul Mescal, set to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics, suggests fans steer clear of deep-diving into Beatles history before the films’ 2028 release.
Paul Mescal, who’s gearing up to step into Paul McCartney’s shoes for Sam Mendes’ ambitious Beatles biopic project, has a bit of advice for punters: don’t go brushing up on Beatles trivia before heading to the cinema. The much-anticipated four-part film event, The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event, is still shrouded in secrecy, with only a handful of casting details out in the open as the production eyes a 2028 release.
In a recent chat with Variety, Mescal kept his cards close to his chest about the role, dodging any specifics about what’s in store. He explained,
“To be honest, I can say very little — actually contractually, but also I’m kind of keen to say very little about it, because I’m excited that people want to know so much about it.”
Keeping the Mystery Alive
Mescal, clearly chuffed to be part of the project, mentioned that he and his fellow castmates—Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn, who’ll be taking on John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison—are still pinching themselves over landing the roles. He reckons it’s best for everyone to go in with as few preconceptions as possible, saying,
“I don’t want to get into the Beatles thing, not coyly, but actually because I think the world hopefully will benefit from knowing as little as possible going into it.”
He also noted that there’s still a fair bit of work ahead, with filming set to keep him busy through 2026. Mescal’s currently wrapping up a stint as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, which has been making waves during awards season, recently nabbing ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ at the 2026 Golden Globes.
Expanding the Cast
The ensemble for Mendes’ Beatles saga has grown beyond the Fab Four. Saoirse Ronan is on board as Linda McCartney, Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, Mia McKenna-Bruce steps in as Maureen Starkey, and Anna Sawai takes on Yoko Ono. The supporting cast also features David Morrissey as Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as Aunt Mimi, and James Norton as Brian Epstein, the band’s manager.
Rounding out the line-up, Harry Lloyd will portray producer George Martin, Bobby Schofield is set as tour manager Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffman-Gill as Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill as press officer Derek Taylor, and Adam Pally as manager Allen Klein. With such a stacked cast, expectations are running high, but Mescal’s keeping mum on the details, keen for audiences to experience the story fresh.
