Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, The Housemaid, is making waves with critics after a tough year. Early reviews hint at a fresh start for the star, but will it be enough to break her box office drought?

After a run of less-than-stellar releases, Sydney Sweeney is banking on The Housemaid to turn things around for her in 2025. Following the disappointment of Christy, which was initially tipped as an awards hopeful but failed to deliver, Sweeney’s latest project is off to a promising start. Early feedback from critics has landed the film a solid 78% rating from 41 reviews on the Tomatometer, giving Sweeney a much-needed boost as the year draws to a close.

Fresh Start for Sweeney

While it’s still early days and reviews can shift, The Housemaid is shaping up to be Sweeney’s most well-received work of the year. Of course, critical praise doesn’t always mean a hit at the box office, but this time, Sweeney isn’t carrying the whole show on her own. The Euphoria star is joined by Amanda Seyfried, and the film is based on Freida McFadden’s popular novel, which already has a loyal following thanks to its success among booktok readers.

Built-In Audience and Box Office Prospects

With a reported budget of $35 million, The Housemaid is tracking for a domestic opening north of $30 million, which lines up with the book’s impressive sales of around 4.5 million copies. Sweeney herself is a fan of the original story and has assured punters that her character stays true to the source material. She shared,

I think that it’s going to be really exciting to see the film come to life. I mean, I’m a huge fan of the book. So, being able to see all of these twisted elements and the secret smiles and how just dysfunctional this family has come to life is going to be really exciting.

Millie is really true to the book, which I was really happy about. Uh, she is just trying to figure out how to navigate a very, very complicated situation. And she finds herself in something way bigger than she thought she was prepared for.

Crowded December, Different Crowd

December’s shaping up to be a busy month at the cinemas, with Zootopia 2 still pulling in crowds and Avatar 3 just around the corner. Even so, The Housemaid is targeting a different audience altogether. If word of mouth and Cinemascore hold up, Sweeney might finally shake off her unlucky streak and finish 2025 on a high. The film’s set to hit screens on 19 December, and locals are already keen to see if it lives up to the hype.
