Kate Hudson nearly starred in a beloved teen rom-com, but her mum Goldie Hawn’s advice changed everything. Discover the story behind the role she turned down and how it shaped her career.

Growing up as the daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, it seemed only natural that Kate Hudson would end up in the world of showbiz. The big question was whether she’d make her mark, and after her Oscar-nominated turn in 2000’s Almost Famous, there was little doubt. Hudson’s portrayal of Penny Lane, the self-described ‘band-aid’ with a love for Afghan coats and wild curls, quickly made her a style icon and a standout in the industry.

Hudson soon became a familiar face in romantic comedies, especially after her hit pairing with Matthew McConaughey in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. That film, with its now-famous yellow dress, cemented her status as a rom-com favourite. She went on to star in a string of similar films, from Bride Wars to Something Borrowed, making it hard to picture her in any other genre.

Turning Down a Breakthrough Role

But before all that, Hudson was nearly cast in a film that would become a cult favourite among teens: 10 Things I Hate About You. Released in 1999, the film was more than just another modern take on Shakespeare. It captured the awkwardness and drama of young love, with memorable performances from Julia Stiles as the sharp-tongued Kat Stratford and Heath Ledger as the charming Patrick Verona. The film’s mix of humour and heart struck a chord with audiences, and it’s still fondly remembered today.

Hudson was in the running for the role of Kat, but her mum had other ideas. According to casting director Marcia Ross,

“The other person I loved was Kate Hudson. But her mum didn’t like the script for her, so she passed.”

At the time, Hudson was still finding her feet in the industry and relied on her mother’s guidance. It’s a common move for young actors, especially when your parent is a Hollywood legend.

What Might Have Been

Looking back, it’s easy to wonder how things might have played out if Hudson had taken the part. 10 Things I Hate About You was a surprise hit, thanks in part to the chemistry between Stiles and Ledger. The film’s over-the-top moments—like Ledger’s serenade on the school bleachers—became iconic, and the cast’s performances helped elevate what could have been a run-of-the-mill teen flick.

Hudson’s career took a different path, but it’s hard not to imagine her bringing something unique to the role of Kat. Still, the decision to pass on the film didn’t hold her back for long. She soon found her own breakout moment, and the rest is history.

Mother Knows Best?

It’s often said that mums know best, but in this case, Goldie Hawn’s advice meant Hudson missed out on a film that would go on to define a generation. Whether it was the right call or not, it’s a reminder of how one decision can change the course of a career. For Hudson, it was just one of many choices on the road to becoming a household name.
