Before his breakout as Ser Lyonel Baratheon in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Daniel Ings took on a lesser-known role in the Marvel universe. Discover the unexpected connection.

British actor Daniel Ings has recently caught the attention of fantasy fans with his portrayal of Ser Lyonel Baratheon in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. But before stepping into the world of Westeros, Ings had a stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that most punters have likely forgotten.

Ings played Ty-Rone, a Kree scientist and right-hand man to Dar-Benn, the main villain in the film The Marvels. While the film itself didn’t exactly set the world on fire, Ings managed to carve out a decent amount of screen time alongside big names like Brie Larson and Iman Vellani.

From Kree Scientist to Scene-Stealer

As Ty-Rone, Ings was part of Dar-Benn’s inner circle aboard her command ship. His character was instrumental in tracking down the Quantum Bands and manipulating the Universal Neural Teleportation Network, all in a bid to help Hala siphon off vital resources from other worlds.

Though Ty-Rone wasn’t front and centre, the role was a bit of a treat for MCU diehards and fans of Ings’ earlier work in Sex Education. Unlike your run-of-the-mill background Kree, Ty-Rone was involved in several key moments, including:

  • Testing the Quantum Bands
  • Overseeing the Atmospheric Restoration Ceremony
  • Reporting on battle damage

Ty-Rone was created specifically for the film, with Ings donning full Kree makeup and costume. Even in what many consider the MCU’s most forgettable entry, Ings’ dry British wit managed to shine through, hinting at his potential for bigger roles.

Landing a Major Role in Prestige TV

Ings’ career has included appearances in popular series like Sex Education, The Crown, and The Gentlemen. His casting as Ser Lyonel Baratheon in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms marks a significant step up, placing him firmly in the spotlight of prestige television.

The series, created by George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker, is set in Westeros roughly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during the Targaryen dynasty. The first season, airing on HBO, consists of six episodes and has already been renewed for a second run.

Taking on the role of the charismatic heir to Storm’s End, Ings has made a strong impression. Critics have highlighted his performance as a standout, especially in the premiere episode, The Hedge Knight. One review put it simply:

HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” Is The Best Fantasy Adaptation of the Decade

On the Rise in Hollywood

With HBO backing another season, viewers can expect to see more of Lyonel Baratheon and his dynamic with Dunk, which promises plenty of twists and turns. Ings’ portrayal has already earned him a reputation as a scene-stealer, and his career is clearly on an upward trajectory.

He’s also set to appear in upcoming projects like Star Wars: Starfighter and Prima Facie, further cementing his place in the industry. The “Laughing Storm” is quickly becoming a fan favourite, and it looks like Ings’ days of minor roles are well and truly behind him.

The Marvels is available to stream on Disney+ in Australia, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can be found on HBO Max.
