Daniel Kaluuya Nears First Draft of Standalone Spider-Punk Film
Daniel Kaluuya is co-writing a Spider-Punk film, with the first draft nearly done and guidance from Spider-Verse producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
After the buzz around Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, plenty of punters were left wanting more of Daniel Kaluuya’s take on Spider-Punk, also known as Hobie Brown. The laid-back London bloke, always up for challenging the system, quickly became a fan favourite. It’s no surprise the Oscar winner was keen to dig deeper into the character, this time in a solo outing for the rebellious webslinger with a battered suit.
Back in August, word got out that Kaluuya had teamed up with Ajon Singh to pen a standalone story for Hobie. Now, the pair are just about finished with the first draft, getting a bit of help from some familiar faces in the Spider-Verse world.
Creative Process and Inspiration
Kaluuya shared how much the Spider-Verse films have struck a chord with him, saying,
“Those Spider-Verse films, they speak to me. I was so inspired by them. I think the filmmakers and the animators are some of the best storytellers in the game. So, I want to put myself in environments where I can grow and learn what they know.”
He’s clearly found the process rewarding, soaking up knowledge from the creative team behind the animated hits.
With the blessing of producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, Kaluuya’s been given solid advice on shaping the story and its characters. Lord pointed out,
“films aren’t about people, they’re about relationships.”
Kaluuya reckons this dynamic is a big part of what’s made the Spidey films such a hit, adding,
“They also tap into a joy of cinema and storytelling and animation, and I think joy is so hard to do, and that’s something I’m aspiring for. They love what they do, and that’s what the audience is really feeling.”
What’s Next for Spider-Punk and the Spider-Verse
It’ll be interesting to see how much of the unique flair and energy from the Spider-Verse makes its way into Kaluuya’s script, which is still in the early stages. Fans are no doubt curious about what a full-length story centred on Hobie Brown will look like, especially with Kaluuya’s creative input and the support of the original producers.
Meanwhile, those hanging out for the next chapter in Miles Morales’ journey will have to wait a bit longer. The third instalment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to hit cinemas on 18 June 2027, so there’s still a fair bit of time before the web-slinging action returns to the big screen.
